While replying to another post, I decided to look up some gambling stats in Maine.

Uggg... thats 56,910 mainers who make under $25k year are gambling at casinos. Very sad.

I guess the plan in Bangor to lift Maine’s poorest county out of economic distress is through the magic of gambling. Sounds like an economic race to the bottom for Bangor.

A new survey says that Maine residents made more than 271,000 trips to Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos in Connecticut in the past 12 months.

That's according to the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth Center for Policy Analysis, which conducted a seven-part survey to determine New England residents' attitudes toward casinos and slot machine parlors.

61% men
39% women.
33% of the Maine casino-goers had college degrees.
60% had annual incomes of $45,000 or more
21% made less than $25,000.

The center surveyed 448 Maine residents last fall to compile its results.

The center says it neither supports nor opposes gambling, and is studying the issue because of gambling's public policy implications in New England.

A third hold at least one college degree, and two-thirds make over $45k.

I am surprised at the 61% male stat.

From what I see tending bar, is that women spend tonnes of money gambling on pull-tab lottery tickets.

Maybe we can have a really strong centralized form of government filled with the social elite. And then they can sift through these stats and decide whats best for us. It looks to me that we should just illegalize gambling for those who make under 25k...or 50k for married couples?

This is a confusing statement.. Bangor is neither in Washington County (which is the poorest county), nor is it the seat of Maine government which is planning or not planning any gambling initiatives- that would be the capitol in Augusta..

Well, as that there is only one county in Maine where the per capita income is even above $25,000... it would make sense that most people going to gamble are not going to be too wealthy.... (Cumberland County, by the way..all the others have per capita income at less than $25,000..)

You would find the root of these stats in the gambling industry. They publicize how many folks are allegedly going to other states to gamble so the home state will get alllll jealous and want to keep all that income and therefore approve gambling. Ask North Carolina. Then read about all the states with approved gambling and all the money they claim goes to the schools. I know I don't have to tell you that FLORIDA ranks VERY FAR DOWN the list as does NC and GA and they all have legal gambling.

Think of the advantage in gambling: It's the house's.

If we did that we could hire more health care workers in Maine to treat the rising cases of STD's. The 1 hour hotel business would be booming which means lots of construction and then workers to run the hotels. The possibilities are endless.

I do not know if that was directed at me, but, ...

I have lived in places where prostitution was legal, and yes I would be in favour of making it legal here.
