Eastport and the WaCo Diner
I'm looking for information about the WaCo Diner in Eastport. I'd especially like to talk to people who eat there regularly or know the city. Does anyone know the names of the original owners, who apparently gave the diner its name?

The WACO diner has been there since the early 1920's and the new owners name is Healey and they are from Scotland. They bought it two or three years ago. I eat there fairly often. The name WACO stands for Washington County.

It's named for Watt-Cowell (Wa-Co), the two guys that started it as a lunch wagon around 1918. Sorry Corgi. The new owners bought it in 2007. He's from Ireland and she's from the Dominican Republic but own a house here in town across from the library. Good place to eat and maybe get a bit of drama to go with it. Friendly folk though.

It started as a 14x125 foot diner but the previous owners expanded about 8-9 years ago. It now has a larger dining room and deck out back.

Is Nancy Bishop still in town? I spoke with her back in 2003 about an article that said the WaCo was the oldest continuously operating restaurant in Maine.

No, since John passed away she is still down in Portland area I believe. Their house is up for sale and all. She'll be up for Johns' memorial around the 4th. I think it's the 4th anyway.

My grandfather was a lineman then a foreman for Bangor Hydro. The diner was his favorite place to eat when they were in Eastport.

There is a picture inside the diner with the original owners' names. According to a Facebook group (and we all know that couldn't be wrong) the owners whose names inspired the diner's name were the Wasson and Colwell.
However it was named, the food is generally pretty good, and the local gossip moves quickly once it reaches the WaCo.
