Just know that, I was born in Springfield, it's not a pretty place. Drive around there, you will see drug deals everywhere. Gang violence everywhere. One time I was getting in my car, I saw a hispanic person walking down the street, and I saw him randomly get shot. I have horrific stories of Springfield, and there is so much rape and murder there.

Please, don't go there.

This is an older post, but yeah I don't like Springfield. I was born and raised in E. Longmeadow. The only time my mom would go to Springfield for us as a kid was to go to Eastfield Mall. I have not lived in MA now for 13 years (6 1/2 in FL and the rest in CT) but if I was to ever move back to Western MA to rent, it would be around Easthampton/Northampton area.

I remember one time there was a segment on 20/20 about the crime in Springfield. Considering how small Springfield is to other cities, the fact they made 20/20 about the crime, and how officers will walk young children to school for their safety - doesn't speak well of the city.

Criminals do not care where you live. At no point is there some social force field that prevents them from entering towns and cities. Where I live a hitman drove up from some place in CT and started taking shots (all missed) at a house. He was hired by her ex.

Here's some ways around crime to a point.

1) Don't carry cash or as little as possible.

2) Have a security system (I recommend lookout) on your smartphone. Put a password on the smartphone as well. It can track where someone is and even activate the camera if they try to break in.

3) I know some might think differently but does anything good happen after 11pm? I know some that beg for bars to be open to practically 4AM but seriously if you have a job and are working why do you need to be out that late unless you work a night shift?

4) Don't wear jewelry. I know some might like to show off but frankly if you like gold then keeping it in a vault might work or use something fake to impress people, same with diamonds

5) In terms of most dangerous if you look at the size it actually ranks lower then what you might think

Chelsea, Fall River, New Bedford and Brockton rank higher. I've been to many of the places on this list granted I would never set foot in the first one.

Naturally places with more people tend to have more in crime and if an area is surrounded by suburbs then they might stereotype it as such. As suburbs grow it becomes apparently that crime is not an only urban issue.

I have worked in the Springfield area for ten years now and have never even SEEN a crime. Crime is a problem at night, in bad neighborhoods, and when drugs are involved. Be smart and you won't have a problem.

I'd like to get specific about areas and have someone answer - How safe is Worthington street where the restaurants and bars are? (adolfos and the bars/pool hall) Is the crowd a bunch of criminals hanging out at the bar or more young professionals? All-day drinkers hanging around the streets? Say i want to walk back from mgm one night to chestnut street, best idea to take a cab? I like Kimball Courts apartments, good prices, and like that mgm is moving in. looking forward to response, and THANKS!

Hmm. Adolfos I've been in. It's not bad the decor is nice. The thing is in judging if someone is hanging out is it's a bit hard to say. Where I live the maintence guy told me of some instances of well for lack of a better term..public sex. They cut down brush and there hasn't been an instance of it..there. Chances are they moved onto somewhere else and this seems to be a bit of a trend. Sometimes cleaning up one area simply moves them to another.

It was said long ago that Boss Daile in Chicago built Caprini Green and his son tore it down. I'm not saying Caprini Green was good, it wasn't. But once they tore it down all of the crime spilled onto the street.

Worthington St I would say is safe but like anything else I put a caveat. How long do you plan on staying out? Personally I don't care what city I'm in but I have no business beyond 11PM. NYE might be something else but for the most part there's really no reason to be out at 1:30am on a weekday bar hopping.

did you mean Kimball towers ? Those are actually condos. If you mean silverbrick apartments I almost moved there. I think they are a bit aggressive but their efforts will pan out in the future.

There is a young professional group

Springfield YPS | Springfield YPS

They just did a pretty big raid against the latin kings nabbing people in springfield, holyoke and even northampton. This might lower crime hopefully. Again like I mentioned before much of this is at night. The pool hall you speak of is one of the two in the city and it goes back probably a century. They don't take any bs with id's. It might sound odd but many don't take out of state even if CT is just 20 minutes down the street.

This might ruffle a few feathers of some but if a place says it takes section eight and you are single and make even OK pay chances are you make too much to afford it. The only frustration I have with the area is that it nailed it down to about three places. Fortunately there's more market rate housing coming on board. I would also say the prices are so low that eventually a decent apartment is almost as much as a house payment! You might want to take a look at Classical condos. the HOA fees are a bit up there but it was a high school they did over. It's right by central library and the building near it is going to be housing related to the casino. Another area is Matoon
19 Mattoon St, Springfield, MA 01105 | Zillow

Valley Ventures is going to move to the Worthington area which is an incubator for small businesses. Gradually there's just been more and move coming in.

Thanks for your response!

After 11 pm - I would be walking back from the casino, what do you think? (in 2018 but based on the environment now)

Kimball Towers yes, 40k for one bedroom in a nice looking building with nice lobby and parking, some of the apts ive seen for sale have new kitchens with small island to sit at too

Worthington Street area is a **** hole. Stay away from the upper Worthington Street area near Federal Street. the back of the police department is on Worthington street. Just up from there is the homeless shelter where you will see them all hours of day like zombies up and down the street. A higher amount of drugs/gang activity in the Worthington/Federal Street area.

Now, down on lower Worthington near the bars. (Adolfo's, etc)Well, that's hit or miss. Generally speaking, if you go down there, mind your business, and keep it moving after you party and don't hang around down there, you will be okay. However, there can be a decent amount of fights down there at times.

I would not live in Kimball towers if you paid me. That place is not considered a decent place to live. There are worse places, but that place has drugs coming out of there, etc. Oh, and Amherst and Springfield are like night and day. Amherst is a decent place to live without nearly the crap Springfield has. I would just party in nearby Northampton If I were you.
