Default Gloucester

I just wanted to say that if you live in or near Gloucester... you are lucky!

We went there on a day trip yesterday and, despite the mediocre weather, we loved it!

We had lunch at Cape Ann Brewing (delish fish!), drove around (OMG! the houses on the water! WANT!), and walked around. The people are so nice. I bought a dress at Harbor Goods/Life is Good, and could have bought out the whole store -- I loved the creamy cotton t-shirts. Drooled in the Dogtown Book Shop (old and unusual books, indeed!). Sampled some olive oils at Cape Ann Olive Oil Company. It's just a terrific little town.

So, if you've never been and are looking for a nice place for a day trip, I suggest Gloucester. Yes, I do.

And if you live there? You really are very lucky.

So funny. We are getting ready to move from NH back into Mass, looking at Salem. I keep seeing nice and rather affordable rentals popping up in Gloucester, but SO says everyone tells him the area is horribily dull and there's not a reason to ever go there! Hmmm...

Used to be, it came a long way. If you are looking for a 'happening' place, Newburyport, Rockport and Gloucester are worth a look.

I know Newburyport has a train station, but it's seriously not far from us now in NH. I am not sure where Rockport is. I'd imagine Gloucester would be a bit hellish for commuting to Boston though?

It's one hour train ride, compared to 30 minutes from Salem. Rockport is on the tip of Cape Ann, next to Goucester, and it's its more upscale neighbor.

That IS funny!

I found Gloucester to be completely charming.

That said, I don't know if I could live there. I'm a big-city girl (I was born and bred in Montreal) so I'd likely find it a bit slow for my tastes. But that's just based on what I'm used to. I found it absolutely LOVELY spending the day there, though, and felt like I could stay longer.

Where in NH are you now? I fell in love with Portsmouth a few years ago. Like BIG TIME love, especially after eating at The Friendly Toast. Yum!

We're on the seacoast in a town neighboring Portsmouth We chose not to live in Portsmouth itself due to the bad school ratings. Yet now we find ourselves moving to Salem for our last year in New England despite the school's iffy reputations to get closer to Boston, downsize and save money.
