Hi Everyone,

We are moving to Boston and planning on living in Newton or Arlington. I have 3 sons, my eldest will thrive in Newton / Arlington public schools as will my youngest. My middle boy, who will be a freshman in September, needs something other than a huge public high school. I need insight into stem focused private schools in the area. I don't want something uber competitive but someplace where he will be stretched and challenged academically but also with a strong athletics program. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

If you're in Arlington, Belmont Hill is very convenient. Good athletics. Good education. It costs $$, but hey, that's the way it goes.

use this website to find schools that may appeal to you. Greater Boston has a plethora of private high schools. You can use the tool on this site to narrow down the choices based on proximity to your location, what the school offers and cost. And once you narrow it down then visit the schools to get a better idea.

If your looking at Arlington and Newton take a look at Belmont too (the city itself, not just the private school).

Look at Matignon High school in Cambridge just minutes from the Arlinton town line. It gets overlooked but has had new athletic fields & upgraded buildings installed recently. They have a STEM council that guides students in those careers.

The tuition is reasonable, about 10k per year whereas a school like Belmont Hill is about 38k per year.

If the OP wants a Catholic religious school, sure, good option.

Well, in this day & age, a school like Matignon's curriculum is not anywhere near as religious as it once was. It's not incidental, but this is not the 1960s. And you are not required to be Catholic.

I went to Catholic schools with the nuns back in the day....that was some hard time

I agree, Catholic Schools are more "school" than "Catholic" at this point. Catholic schools tend to be were you send your kid if he's good at sports. especially hockey.
