It's kind of weird.
They skipped Bedford in that group, which has many Indians too.

------------------------

Police said the circumstances in these two break-ins are consistent with "an ongoing residential break-in investigation, where often the victims are of South Asian and/or Indian descent."

Additionally, police said that while residential break-ins are infrequent in Sudbury, there is a regional increase that follows similar patterns. Other affected communities include Lincoln, Billerica, Natick, Weston, North Attleboro, Easton, Wellesley, Carlise, Chelmsford, Hopkinton and Burlington.

It's not unusual for south Asian criminals to target members of their own demographic. Bedford has some Indians but not a significant number like Burlington. It's unclear to me if the increase in break-ins in all those towns are directly connected to mostly south Asians, or whether they are just frequent victims. So Bedford may not have seen an increase due to less of the targeted demographic or because of other variables specific to that town.

Could be a stupid question, but I honestly don't know. Are South Asians known to (or at least stereotyped to) keep large quantities of cash on hand? I remember several years back in the Quincy area, there was a rash of break-ins targeting Chinese households because the presumption was that they preferred cash and often had large quantities on hand.

I don't think so. But some small business owners (restaurants, convenience shops etc.) may take cash home sometimes.

South Asians are the richest ethnic group in the US. Maybe that's why

Not cash, but rather jewelry. Many of them keep it at home as they (men & women) wear gaudy jewelry to weddings and other major social events. This is well known to many, unfortunately. Best off keeping such stuff in a bank safe deposit box...but still may not deter the break-ins.

Thanks. I just saw a story about an Indian couple having $70k worth of jewelry stolen from their suitcases after forgetting them in a rideshare on the way to Logan.

Yeah, not surprised. This jewelry habit is fairly well-known and makes South Asians "soft targets".

Are they known to keep valuables in their home though? You wouldn't know my rich friends (not South Asian) are rich because they live in modest homes without any valuables in them.

Where I live now, a few years back there was a rash of break-ins targeting East Indians. They managed to catch the thieves who came from out of state to commit the burglaries.

While I have met and seen East Indians who live modestly, there are plenty that buy the biggest houses they can afford, the most expensive vehicles and dress in a way that flaunts their wealth. IMO, no matter what race, religion or ethnicity one is, it's never good to flaunt one's wealth.
