That is my thought as well. Probably an anti-gambling push under the guise of 'preservation.' Granted they can modify the interior building however they would like it would just be the exterior that has to be preserved, but it nonetheless puts a wrench in Genting's plans.

I'm all for preserving history but this building is simply a big warehouse.

How many other warehouse do you know of that are waterfront. That alone makes it unique/one of a kind.

Whatever happens with the Herald building itself, I'll be glad to see the end of that huge surface parking lot in front. The parking lot takes up more real estate than the actual building, so there's still plenty of space for Genting to build a mega hotel/casino/convention center.

Yes, but part of the problem is how the Herald building takes up the prime real estate of the property. If it weren't bay front real estate there's no way Genting would have paid over $200M for the site.

But if the building were to be demolished Genting would have to comply with the city of Miami's 50 foot setback & they have said themselves that they would open the site to public access to the Bayfront.

Right, but a 50 foot set back and having a walking area open to the public isn't a very big deal. A multi story building with terrible to no windows (remember, they can't touch the outside of the building) is. It not only blocks the view from a lot of the area further west on the property, but is also not conducive to new development that would make the bay front area appealing to said pedestrians.

I once walked along the rooftop edge of that building. If they knock it down, I want one of the rooftop bricks.

The picture illustrates perfectly how useless the bay front area of the property will be if the building stays. It obstructs the main sell of the property!

Sobe- glad you didn't fall, you look pretty close to the edge there! LOL!

What a hideous building... I'm against the full casino proposal, but anything would be better than that eyesore

It’s already proven that the building doens’t meet the standards for historical preservation. It's an ugly eyesore. Tear it down!
