Even if it is legal, I think anyone that is transgender will have problems in the military.

Well there are >15,000 *trans* serving currently so don't know how many are having issues.

The other fly in the ointment is that while the announced policy will likely prevent trans from being discharged or denied entry into military services it is only a first step according to their supporters. Tricare for instance will not pay for hormonal treatment and various surgeries such as breast implants. Nor does it cover sex-change operations and such operations cannot be performed at VA hospitals.

Lifting ban on transgender troops only a 1st step, advocates say | Miami Herald

Don't know how much of this can be done by the Obama administration (and Pentagon) via their magic pen versus requiring Congressional action. Either way look for as much as possible to be done before Obama leaves in 2016.

Can you cite your source for that?

I don't think this is true. I've been in for 4 years and my career field allows me to know very personal information about most of the people at my base. I have yet to encounter even one transgendered person.

One of the concerns is that people will join the military simply to have a sex change operation paid for for free by Tricare, which could be catastrophic. Military health care is already on the verge of bankruptcy. This may be the tipping point.

I don't understand this since it is considered a mental health disorder. Because of the characteristics of the disorder, I just don't think it should be allowed. I was in the military and if I would have seen something like this, I would not have joined. People who don't have it together with themselves...........not in the military with my son! Anywhere Else, it is no longer considered a mental health disorder by the DSDM- sorry.

Everyone said all the same things about all the problems we would have if gays were allowed to openly serve. They've been serving openly for some time with no issues. This will be a non-issue and a non-event once the rules are all worked out.

I have no problems with gays in the military. I worked with many and never had any issues. I still believe anyone transgender will still have problems.

Very personal information access has absoutely nothing to do with someone's life at home out of uniform.
For all you know they could go home and take off the uniform and immediately put on their evening gown, wig, make up, heels and do their nails.

So as far as you are aware of you have not encountered one transgendered person however 1/4 of those you have encountered "could" be transgendered.
