Great art museum, good utilization of the lakeshore, and those traffic lights on highway on ramps are a stroke of genius.

Milwaukee is a sleeper city. People have heard of Milwaukee, but don't know much about it at all. The place has an awesome nightlife for such a low key city.

Like if you order a pitcher of dark beer people wouldn't drink it, it was just to different. or one guy telling me he moved out of the city because "he didn't want his daughter to get knocked up by a black guy". Or once I was at the YMCA and women punched another in the arm because she lipped off to her while on the jogging track. And then there was the time when one of "milwaukee's finest" off duty officers harassed this guy because he didn't send the guy a thank you note for givng a wedding present . Also, I saw an inordinate amount of barfights.. so maybe it is a combo of a booze culture and people trying to live up to Lavern and shirley expectations. But in all fairness, this is probably common thruout the midwest. I wouldn't have even bothered posting this, but I noticed other people who had similar expereinces and views in other threads.

So yeah "seems right out of the 1970s" is correct...accept this all happened during the "new millenium".
To sum up Milwaukee by what you experienced in West Allis and the southside is sheer stupidity. I have lived in suburbs of Milwaukee for my whole life (53yrs) and frequent the city for entertainment and recreation. Milwaukee is a very segregated city and the southside/West Allis is predominantly working-class Polish descent. You will see heavy drinkers and bar fights there. Don't get on me for my comments, I have relatives in these areas and by no means dislike the area, there are several old theaters there that I would go to for concerts and some bars I went to see alternative bands at. Bay View is on the south side near Lake Michigan and it is one of the most up and coming hip places in Milwaukee. The Cactus Club is there (national alternative bands) and another great place is Cafe Lu Lu.

I grew up on the South Side and there's a reason I don't live there now. It's because everything that arkadin described I could totally see happening. Bar fights, blatent, almost celebratory bigotry. These are things I remember well growing up on the South Side, and while other parts of town aren't exactly Manhattan they suit me and my individuality much more. Overall I really enjoy living in Milwaukee and it's too bad people come away with negative impressions based on knuckleheads who congregate in certain bars. Oh well.

What comes to mind when I think of Milwaukee. I would say Garbage town U.S.A, America's most boring city.

Come on get real , there is always something to do .

We go to see bands , drink some beers , go to the casino , Brewers games , Summerfest (and the rest of them) plenty of great places to eat all kinds of food. Make it what you want it to be , we have lived here our whole lives and you can always find someplace to have some fun.

Why, because it doesn't have "more skyscrapers and light rail", or because it doesn't have more chain restaurants?

If you're looking for homogenity with light rail, there are cities that fit your criteria, already built and waiting for you.

Other cities with light rail and chain restaurants! Seriously! You don't say!

Look, don't be mad at me because Milwaukee isn't fit to be a suburb of Dubuque, Iowa.

Most of your posts are rude, insulting or negative. Do you ever have anything good to say? Try to be a bit more positive.
