I keep running into this with friends and family, but many people from Minneapolis think that Minneapolis = Chicago in terms of size and type of urban lifestyle. I have a friend in town that I haven't seen since college and she is staying downtown in Chicago at a nice hotel for work. She told me today she couldn't believe how much bigger and busier Chicago is than Minneapolis. She said that all this time she always thought Chicago was about the same size as Minneapolis. I've had many people say this to me in the past. Just curious as to what people in Minneapolis really think about the size of their city...

Never heard this before. I'd think it's hard to mix up the sizes of the cities based on population alone.

Maybe it's because you're still living there. As a Minnesota transplant being in Chicago the last 6 years I hear this ALL THE TIME.

Maybe my circle of friends from MN are just plain stupid

I certainly can’t speak for anyone other than myself, but I don’t know of anyone who finds Minneapolis to be like Chicago. We’re far enough away from Chicago that we don’t get lost in its shadow, and can retain some urban individuality. That said, I think most of us recognize that Chicago has a more prominent role in the hierarchy of US cities than does Minneapolis.

I moved to Chicago two years ago from Minneapolis, and I've never heard anything like that. Not uncommon for Chicagoans to think Minneapolis is as small as Milwaukee or even Omaha, but Minneapolitans seem to have a pretty good grasp on at least the realm of Chicago's size.
