St Anthony Main...is that decent? I was going to say Linden Hills as well. I miss walking or biking around the lakes.

(Not sure about these next two - they're OK and not particularly quaint but they both have a lot of independents in long-held businesses)

Where I live around 50th & 34th has a bunch of neighborhood shops as well, although most of them are work-a-day places (not even a coffee shop). The bookshop at 54th, however, is good for some serious exploration with some unique curios to look at, and there are some nice restaurants at 50th and 56th.

66th and Penn is a bit on the run-down side (not sketchy, it just hasn't been "updated" since the 60's (except for a modest face lift in ugly 80's colors on the north end) and has shops and restaurants that have been around for decades - it was Richfield's first commercial strip. Nothing on the "oh look, how cute" scale, but Fireside pizza is a neighborhood institution with live music on some days, and the second hand store makes good browsing. The more interesting shops are on the south end.
I really like the area around Riverview Theater. In addition to the theater, there's Fireroast Coffee about 5 blocks west on 38 St. In addition to great coffee, they have fabulous tamales and great baked goods (cakes, muffins, scones, etc.) all made on the premises. Kitty corner from the theater is Riverview Wine Bar. Get a flight of wine for a reasonable price, and the food is excellent. Try the Figaro pizza--it's great! Across the street is Mother Earth, a small, friendly landscape shop.

Also, don't forget the Nokomis Beach Coffee Shop at 50th St & 28 Ave. It's a neighborhood institution.

I hope you make it into St paul once in a while. Its really quite charming, better looking people (wink) and with a "real" vibe.

1) I like downtown Mineapolis on Nicollet avenue for sunny afternoon/evenning stroll/bike rides.
2) Manageable nightlife (vibe)- Bulldogs St Paul, the local Minneapolis, Brits Minneapolis, Independent Minneapolis.
3) Grand avenue St paul with shopping esperience and historical buildings. A bike ride down summit avenue is also quite nice (bigger versons of the cottage style houses in West Etobicoke/Bloor West/High Park).
4) Best Mall (vibe): 1st -Burnsville mall , 2nd-Roseville mall.
5) Best restaurant/date spot (vibe) - cafe lurcat, Loring pasta bar, cafe babette.

Get out, meet people and enjoy. Goodluck!

Thanks! I do plan to visit St. Paul soon. I'll probably go with my sig other when he visits.

I'll try to get out and meet people when I can, but at present I've got homework (lots of reading). However, I did get out for a run around the lake today, which was amazing. Also planning to check out the Uptown movie theater soon.
