Looking to relocate
My family is looking to possibly relocate. My husband and I are both from the north and currently reside in the south. We miss winters and there are too many people here. But, I am not sure if I am up to that much winter! I am originally from southern WI. But he is self-employed and we need to move somewhere where there is enough construction in the area to sustain us, he draws house plans. Do you know how much building there is in the area? It is hard to find a balance between a secluded rural area and still make a living on construction! Thank you for your time.

threekids...
I doubt there's enough new construction around Baudette to sustain a family in your husband's line of work. You might, however, want to look somewhere like St. Cloud or maybe even the Brainerd area. Lots of growth but still close to all those wonderful lakes and forests. You could easily live on a lake and still be close to town. Or if you're looking to go back to WI, you might want to check out the Eau Claire area, which is also growing. Good luck!

to familyman: I moved my family here to Baudette ( lake of the woods county )in the fall of 1994my wife got a job at the wigwam resort her first week here, In 2000 she went to work at cyrus resort. My son 18 has worked at the wigwam for three years now my daughter works there part time on weekends with grandma and aunt. Grandma and aunt have worked at the wigwam since 1997. I how ever cant get a job in this county, Even when I am the only quailified applicant. Because I wasent born and raised here. Its differant for woman, Your wife probably wont have any trouble fing work but you probably will have to fing work in either warroad or rosoue. I work for a security company contracted to marvin windows from fall 1998 to april 2005. the boss refused to give me the raise he promised in writing, I had no chose but to leave the job because all I was doing working to pay for the gas to back and forth to work. Land is cheap enough if you have the money. Fishing real is not all that good. Deer hunting is ok if you can get some where theres no on to molest you hunt and watchout for the guys born and raised here alot of them road hunt ( poach deer ) and they dont much caire wich direction they shoot and dont caire about truspassing. We cam from near youngstown ohio. There things that suck here, But its still better than ohio!
Good luck on finding a job friend.

Baudette
My exhusband was born and raised in the area, my sone currently lives up there as well. Matter of fact, my ex is some supervisor at Marvins.
Anyways, my son was so disappointed this year, he wanted to enter the contest for teens, but the cutoff was 16. Well at least he got to get his license this year.
I have lost familyman's email to email back to him. Sorry.
We are still planning the big move for the end of summer. I am so excited, have you seen some of the property that is for sale? Email me and I will give you the links, if you are interested.
My son called last nite, only -12 at the time, brrr. Here it is 48 and I am hugging my furnace, should be an interesting first winter next year.

Questions about Baudette, MN
There are at least four of us that I know of in the Seattle Area that lived in Baudette. I lived there when my dad was stationed at the USAF radar base that used to be in operation just South of town (it is now an artic conditions test site for automobiles). It was a good days drive to the nearest poplation centers (Grand Forks, ND; Duluth, MN; & Minneapolis/St.Paul). It is a small community without much industry, some marginlal farming and tourism seemed to be the mainstays. The have recetnly built new school buildings ans consolidated attendance with a smaller town (Williams) to the West. You can go on the internet and read about the "Lake of the Woods" schools. Back then (the early 1960s----before cable TV) there was little outside of school for the kids, but if you like camping, fishing, etc. the summers were great.
If you have any specific questions, I would be happy to respond.
CALindy, Baudette HS '62.

Fishing is AWESOME in Baudette on Lake of the Woods. People drive all the way up there from all over MN and other parts of the country to go fishing!!
I will agree that it is not easy to get a good job up there.
