I am shocked to hear they are building another plant after announcing layoffs at the brand new plant in San Antonio TX. Wonder if they are still building it?

I had heard that the work week in the Texas plant had been scaled back to 35 hours, but I didn't know they had actually laid off anyone.

Yes, they are still building the plant near Tupelo. And, apparently, they are still planning on making Highlanders there, even in the face of slumping SUV sales. The plant will definitely have a positive economic impact on NE Miss, but with the economy the way it is, I think it may take a few years for the full impact to be felt.

Texas isn't laying anyone off the are having non production days which means one of three things. one you can take a vacation day. two you can take a no pay for the day or three you can go to work and they will find something for you to do even if it is sweeping the floors. It's amazing how rumors get started.

Texas is laying off itss temps for the summer but the work for a temp service and aren't toyota employees. They did that in ky a few years back and then 6 months after the temps got hired toyota maxed out their pay scale. But as far as full time toyota employees go none are layed off nor will they be.

I personally think it is great regardless of location for MS, Toyotal is a top rated car and they invest in hybrid energy, I am wondering if they will build the plant with all solar panels like they have in the foriegn plants. If so, KUDOS for bringing green thinking to MS. At least this is a plant making cars that sell, not a GM who builds gas guzzling SUV's that no one wants right now.
I lived on the coast when gambling came to town, although it apparently brought jobs I saw more bad than good for the economy. Pawn shops on every corneer, more divorce, overcrowded road ways, more crime, more social problems in general.
I think toyota would be positive, it encourages production rather than taking advantage of people by encouraging alcoholism and gambling. MS needs more quality production plants, not casinos. I agree however about OREK, that was a mistake to lose that plant and Sara Lee. MS should try to encourage Good solid companies.
another thing, when casinos went to the coast they bragged about how good it would be, well they never put into the forethought of infrastructure of roads until after the fact and then after Katrina all the government could worry about was getting the casinos up and running as quickly as possible so people already ruined from the storms could spend money they did not have to spend at the casinos. Go figure.

Indiana and Texas will stop production for 3 months but toyota is paying them for 40 hours a week to train and focus on quality. Now who else would do that? It goes to show you that times are hard but toyota thought ahead and has deep pockets.

I've had the pleasure of touring your KY plant and was very impressed. Not only with the technology Toyota implements, but with each person I met.

Everyone was smiling, seemingly very happy at their stations. Yes, they were busy as bees, but they were happy. What a great thing to see and to know that this company is soon to be in our own backyard?

Yes, Toyota is very good at giving to the communities and schools. They have, at the initial announcement given many millions of dollars to the schools in all three of the PUL counties. A very good start indeed.

As far as the price of land, so far, I have not seen it escalate, but there is not much for sale. Some of the locals have put their homes up for sale with ridiculous prices, but soon lowered them down. With the housing market down, I just don't see areas go nuts with land prices unless the land is right around the site.

Land prices in Lee county have always been higher than in Pontotoc and Union counties. Many people wish to live closer to Tupelo so will pay the higher prices.

Well we do have people that will complain about anything but most people like and appreciate their jobs. They remember what it was like before they got hired. The land prices will go up. Right now in the citey cheap lots sale foraround 40,000 dollars and some go for over 100,000 dollars for small lots just depends on the neighborhoods. And out in the county you can get around 5 acres for40 to 80 thousand depending on it being level or hilly. So if you have it hold on to it for a few years and cushion your retirement with the profits.

thanks for the advice. Currently I own a home inside Blue Springs, actually it is 3.1 miles from the Toyota site. And then I own 7 acres right behind me, it might be close to the new road they are planning, I won't know until they decide on the final route.

My father in law owns 23 acres inside the town, so I need to tell him to hang on to it as long as possible.
