Can anyone tell me anything about Byhalia, MS?? We are moving (myself, my husband and our 6 month old) from FL. We have a short term lease on an apt in Cordova,TN while we house hunt, but are really looking more at the north MS area for houses. From the research my husband has done online, Byhalia looks pretty affordable. I know it's small, but can anyone tell me anything else?? Good or bad, anything is appreciated. Thanks!

Have you checked out the school system? That is the #1 reason people won't move to Marshall County, which includes Byhalia. Byhalia has a new high school but it is not a racially balanced school system. That won't be a problem if you plan on staying less than 5 years.

No, we plan on staying where ever we end up buying a house for a long time...we've looked at the Desoto county schools, which look to be pretty good, but haven't looked at Marshall county yet. What do you mean by its not racially balanced?? Thanks for your help!

I recently retired to Mississippi from California, so all the housing seems reasonable to me. While looking at homes here though, I did look at a couple in Byhalia..in a word...country. If you are looking for a rural area away from the bright lights, that's your place. I am not sure of the school system there, but have heard the DeSoto County schools are quite good. Lewisburg and Southaven recently opened new high schools. I finally settled in Hernando...also a beautiful place, but growing fast.

My ex-inlaws lived in Byhalia... The school system in Marshall county is rated well below that of Desoto County, but the housing is much less expensive, on the whole. The commute to Memphis (if that's where you will be working) is really only available via Highway 78 which will become the I-22 corridor at some point in the future. For now, plan on a fairly lengthy commute starting about the time you hit the Tennessee state line. There are very few restaurants, and no chains; from what I recall they have one Big Star grocery store and 3-4 gas stations. For entertaintainment, you'll have to travel back to Desoto County (about a 10 mile commute to Olive Branch's commercial center, and 20-25 miles to Southaven or Hernando).
Hope that helps... |

You can live "near" byhalia and still be in DeSoto county. There are several new subdivisions starting, in the eastern portion of DeSoto county. You have the benefit of Desoto county schools, and the benefit of "small town" byhalia..
