Here is another good read...The battle of Fredericktown.
This one is interesting in that the Southern troops were making a raid
to capture much needed lead from Mine La Motte. The Federals heard
of this and came charging up what is now hwy 72 to cut them off, the Southerners escape by going down what is now US 67 and a running battle ensued. Good stuff!

The Battle of Fredericktown

A school chum has a graveyard on their land that has Confederate soldiers who were killed in the battle buried in it.

My gg grandfather fought in that battle, we have a picture of him taken just after the battle was over. He was in the 5th Mo Cav.

Why in the world would a Union cavalryman meet a Confederate officer?
My ancestor was from the same place I have listed as my location right now.
I know my Civil War history....my parents idea of vacations was to visit battlefields.

Oh my bad. There was a 5th Calvary MO Confederate unit also.

That does sound boring visiting old battle fields over and over. Most of them are just empty fields.

The MO Confederate retirement home sounds interesting but its insulting they never put the Flag back up after "one term" Bob had it taken down!

Actually, in retrospect, its pretty cool.......it did spark my interest in the Civil War, I have been back to re-visit battlefields since then, and have been able to trace exactly where my ancestors stood and fought.
I have another GGG grandfather from Mo (non German from the PB area) that fought on the Confederate side, he went to Arkansas to sign up.

My mom has German in her. They came to America in 1806 she said. Way before Germans came to Missouri or Mo became a state.

My French ancestors came to the area in 1699(Kaskaskia).
I'm a direct lineal descendant of Jean-Baptiste Deguire dit LaRose, the first settler of Sainte Genevieve, which is the oldest town in Missouri.
That, and a dollar, will get me cup of coffee.
But it is pretty cool, historically and genealogically, to be a direct descendant of the first European settler in Missouri.

I would guess that's why some of the older southern cities have some of the largest Catholic populations such as the state of Lousiana and city of Mobile?

I do notice that in some parts of Missouri that have french influence look very similar to the stuff in New Orleans. Like gravestones for example.

You gotta remember, the area was all French, it was called the Illinois Country by the French, they came down from French Canada.
My ancestor came down the river to from French Canada to Kaskaskia, which was on the Illinois side before the Mississippi changed course in 1881 and the island became attached to Missouri, (its still considered part of Illinois). At one time, Kaskaskia was the capital of Illinois, and the largest city in all of the Louisiana territory, you would never know it now, to look at it.....one of my German ancestors owned most of it in the late 1800s. (Wish I had a piece of it now, prime farmland!)
That city, Fort de Chartes, Sainte Genevieve, and some other outposts were established before STL, and all the others.
Sainte Genevieve is called the Mother City of the West.....you should read the history of the region, its fascinating, you seem to like history.
And yes, to answer your question, thats why there are such large Catholic populations in NOLA, Louisiana, and Mobile.
