A third of Missouri once was covered with tallgrass prairie, about 15 million acres. Now, about 80,000 acres remain. More than 99% of our prairie heritage has vanished under the plow and development. Missouri's largest remnant tallgrass prairie is 2,678 acre Prairie State Park in Barton County.

In 1907, the metal polishers at the Buck Stove & Range Company of St. Louis went on strike for a 9 hour work day. The American Federation of Labor (AFL) put the company on their "Unfair List." The company obtained a sweeping injunction forbidding the boycott. To obey, Samuel Gompers (founder of the AFL), John Mitchell and Frank Morrison were sentenced to prison for contempt. The Supreme Court later dismissed the case.

" THE SIXTH FLOOR VAULT "

On July 12, 1973, the National Personnel Records Center in Overland, Missouri, caught fire destroying 16-18 million military personnel records. The destroyed sixth floor housed a security vault which contained high profile and notable records of U.S. Navy and Marine Corps veterans. Some of the records destroyed include the U.S. Navy records of Greek Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou as well as Hitler's nephew, William Patrick Hitler.
We only lived a few blocks away and I remember a bunch of us going down there to watch. It burned all night, lit up for miles. I don't believe it was an accident, I think someone was going " Burn Baby Burn."

I was there a couple of times in the mid 60s, my brother was born in California. We always wanted to build a tree house like the one they have, that thing is huge.
