I was out riding a colt and teaching him to not leap across ditches he crosses, we crossed over a dry ditch several times, I was watching his front feet as best I could while up on his back and I heard the buzz and saw a rattler strike at his front foot on the "on" side.
The snake missed by only a fraction. I am very protective of my colts so before I realized what I was doing I jumped off the horse and stomped the snake to death. On the ride back to the barn I was just shaking my head that I did that. The snake had to die but a death by my boot was pretty risky for me. My leather boots came nearly to my knee but I have heard of snakes hitting above the knee.

I've never seen one but I've never looked. I would fear black widows more.

You can run into bears and cats in town, as for snakes never seen on here nor have I heard much about rattlers around town, either Missoula or the Flathead.

There are prairie rattlesnakes in most of the state. They are not as dangerous as water moccasins or coral snakes (although I don't advise petting them). I spent quite a bit of time in the outdoors and in 16 years of living in Montana I saw two. It is something to be aware of when you are out and about, but I wouldn't worry excessively. Just make sure if you are in a rocky area you look before you sit or reach somewhere.
