I-81 from the Strasbug exit to Corridor H in Wardensville is about 15 miles. Not exactly a long hike and it is on a 2 lane road that is predominantly flat sans a few miles right at the WV border. Hell you can be to Moorefield in 2 hours from my condo in Arlington if you don't hit traffic. Not exactly the 'middle of nowhere.' Are you really going to imply that just because the state of Virginia refuses to participate in a while 15 miles of four lane that it is a worthless project? I have driven that stretch numerous times and there are a ton of VA, MD and DC plates heading to some of our states most heavily visited tourist areas. Clearly you guys are missing something or have never even come close to traveling it. My thought is the latter. Should the state have not funded the Mon Fayette because of low ridership in PA? Once Corridor H is completed to Davis in 2013 it will be a very easy shot from the DC area to the ski areas and numerous state parks in West Virginia. That would seem like a net benefit to a state that has always relied on tourism as a main portion of its economy.

And CT...regarding the 27,000 vehicles per day traveling 705...I would love to know what that figure is excluding traffic counts on WVU game days. It wouldn't be a fraction of that. And regarding other areas that have a potential to match the growth in Morgantown...Martinsburg and surrounding Berkeley County are growing a lot faster. You guys keep saying there is all of this new economic growth in Morgantown outside of WVU but where are the new companies? Even Mylan, the employer everyone talks about in Morgantown is headquartered outside of Pittsburgh. There is nothing wrong with being a thriving town because of a thriving university and that is the story of Morgantown.

Again I hate that this thread has become derailed, but please stop with the whole Morgantown is screwed over by the state line. It's old and nobody except 'townies' in Morgantown have ever bought it.
We have no way of knowing whether the counts for 705 included game day traffic. Since they were directed from Charleston, it's a pretty good bet they did not, but even if they did, are you saying game day traffic doesn't count? 705 is used by people from all over the state, including Charleston, on game days. They have a right to efficient transit too. 705 has more than twice the daily usage as US 35. And, the WV state investment in Mon Fayette was minimal. Most of the relatively small section was built with Federal "stimulus" money.

I know this much, I was on 705 tonight at 10pm and it was busy then. It is busy at 7am too. 705 is busy until about 1am every day, and even more so when The University is in session. I used to work for the state and have been all over it, including some areas that were once more populous than currently. There is not a state numbered highway in our state that has the traffic as does 705, and the reason it is problematic is the state has not done its job from Stewartstown Road through Mileground to Point Marion Road. Apparently they are getting ready to make a start at it, and my response is "it is about time"!

Look Fellows, your lack of sight beyond your doorstep is putting you in deep trouble. You all can't look past Morgantown, and want to do nothing but bash every other state funded institutinon, project, or town. WVU is a huge form of state funding. WVU has grown into the largest "business" in the state, and the revenue that has spun off of it in Morgantown has led to its ultimate growth. So with this logic, Morgantown already gets more from the state than almost every community in WV with the exception of the state capital. I never said it shouldn't get funding because it has WVU, but I did say that you should stop complaining and being so spoiled because you already have more than everyone else.

Southern WV has Nothing! And when I say nothing, I mean nothing. No large colleges, no state unded tech corridors, no fancy pork FBI centers, Nothing! And while you all think that it gets more from the state, the truth is it doesn't. Not a cent more. In fact it gets less. Nobody hates anything about NCWV. Just because somebody disagrees about funding, doesn't mean that they are out to attack NCWV. You all are so spoiled that you think that anything not going to Morgantown is a sin. well let me tell you this, you all are wrong and can't face the facts. Why don't you do your homework and learn that southern WV, and some middle of nowher towns in the potomac highlands need what they hopefully will get someday.

Actually, I feel this post applies to you and Charleston. You lack sight behind Southern WV and see no benefits of the growth of NCWV and the Eastern Panhandle. Your is in decay, while we thrive, but you steal our money to try and preserve your status.

WVU is not the biggest business in the state, the state government is. Charleston gets WAAAAY more in state funding than WVU, and roads to boot. It is you who is spoiled. Not only are Charleston people spoiled, but they are greedy and hypocrites. They complain how Morgantown gets WVU and deserves nothing else while they steal from all the state and give themselves great projects with the money. Charleston just doesnt want state money to go too far from Charleston.

Morgantown needs roads because it has grown a LOT and is still growing fast. Southern WV has shrunk alot and is shrinking fast. I am not arguing that Southern WV doesnt deserve roads, but the state should be doing about the Morgantown road situation. Morgantown needs them for legitimate reasons and not for welfare like Southern WV. It is not the state government's job to redistribute wealth from prosperous areas like Morgantown and give it to poverty stricken areas in the south. I always thought you were anti-socialist chris, but from your posts I can see on the state level you cant.

Also, the FBI center you are complaining about, that is federal too. The federal government realized how neglected NCWV was and stepped up. It didnt cost the state a dime. Also WVU is funded by the state, but most of those funds come from the federal government anyway. Byrd saw that NCWV was the future of WV and could save the state so he had the federal government do what the state government refused to do, give it money. With a little investment the area grew rapidly. Meanwhile the state government pumps money into Southern WV trying to emulate Morgantown's success, but the area still declines.

People from your area of the state are spoiled. They contribute nothing and receive all the funding. They they think giving Morgantown, or NCWV or eastern panhandle any money is a sin. You need to do your homework and realize we are the only areas of WV that are self-sufficient and can take care of ourselves. Give us new roads and we will have the money back in new revenues in no time, and could easily fund some pork projects in the south.

So for all the haters of NCWV stop being spoiled, greedy, and hypocrites.

Lets back up our words with data, here is a good place to start.

Traffic Analysis

Click on flow map it's pretty neat, it looks to me everyone is right in their own way. The eastern panhandle gets left out as usual. Morgantown has most of its traffic in town according to the map, not a lot of sprawl. Charleston has the most traffic obviously. Of course what the map doesnt show is congestion, just actual usage.

Exactly, that is why Morgantown needs better roads.

OK look, I have never said that Morgantown doesn't deserve road construction and projects. Never, so stop putting words in my mouth. I also never said that the FBI center was a state funded project. But I did say that southern WV (Not Charleston) has nothing like it or WVU for that matter. The southern half of the state has nothing but countless towns that are hard to get to, and thousands of people that can't travel in a reasonable amount of time. If you look at facts, they would point you in the direction that the whole coal feilds region has had almost no help from the state in terms of funding. WVU is the largest thing in the state because it is the state. It is one big lump of state government that only Morgantown gets the pleasure of hosting. You should be blessed, because the peeps in Bluefield, Logan, and Danville would give limbs for what you have. I'm not talking about Charleston, but the truely rural towns that have nothing. Charleston has been blessed to have both the state capital and its recent economic boom. But the coal fields need a little extra.

Another thing is that you have resorted to calling names again. I don't appriciate being called a little Obama (socialist), and I think that you need to do your homework. I've supported 100% capitalist ideas, like commercial development along Corridor H. I do feel however that if the state should do its half in paving the way for growth. Agree 100% that Mtown needs some new roads to deal with traffic. But I don't agree that somehow Southern WV doesn't, and that you feel you are being cheated when you aren't!

I'm make it simple. Here is a list of the things i either support or don't, that way you don't have to make things up about what I've stated.

Support:

1. Morgantown Road Work, and that the state needs to do a better job
2. Corridor H, and the possibility of future growth in the region.
3. That Morgantown isn't underfunded, just could use some help
4. That there is NO dislike of Morgantown by the state, and that the concept is dumb.
5. The state government is behind the times.

Don't Support/Dislike

1. The thought that Charleston is some kind of evil place where the state gov. only looks out for Charleston.
2. The idea that some on this forum have, that NCWV is some kind of oasis, and the rest of the state is hell on earth.

Chris, I am not bashing Charleston, but the state government. They do look out for Charleston they need to live there. I dont think they do it out of love for the area, but love of themselves.

To be clear I am not against corridor H. I just feel the state needs to have better priorities. It would be great if Morgantown got its road and corridor H was built. However, we keep getting told that there is no money for roads here and we see huge projects like corridor H. I am for corridor H but I am for smart growth first, or at the same time. Ill support 10 corridors through WV if Morgantown gets a little funding.

It will give road access to a few small towns, but by large most small towns in WV wont have it. The reason there is no interstate there is because there is no travel there. People arent there and there is no reason to go other than a few state parks. They are great state parks, but a better interstate system wont improve the area along most of corridor H. Development might be a few gas stations, cheap motels, and fast food restaurants.

However, Morgantown is hated by the state and underfunded. Look at this thread. CT announced Morgantown was getting a little road work and the forum erupts into an anti-Morgantown fervor. Instead of, "nice Morgantown needed it," we hear how Morgantown doesnt deserve it, how terrible it is, etc.

People in this forum dont bash the rest of the city. We just dont like the hostility directed towards us all of the time. It creates a bad climate that leads to conflict.

Finally, WVU is not as big as the state government. Morgantown does benefit from WVU, but Charleston benefits more from the state government. This is not a matter of resentment and I happy for Charleston. I am merely stating a fact. However, you get good roads we dont. That is because the state government can create roads and WVU cant.

Corridor H isn't being worked on right now for one, so it isn't like any money is being used for it. In fact, the federal government has blocked funding for it, so until that happens all we can do is dream because there is no construction at this time.

What I'm saying is that WVU is the state government, so by default it is the largest thing in the state. There is no seperation between it and the capital because our state is too dependent on the univeristy for economic stability within our borders. While you may feel that it is underfunded, that can't be because its like saying the state isn't funding itself.

Sure Charleston benifits from the state government, but doesn't every capital city? Look at Harrisburg, or Columbus, or even Madison, all of these towns benifit from only the state capital being there. Charleston has that priviledge, but it is also lucky enough to be the state's largest economy. So it gets what any city with its role in both state government and state business needs. And of course its not like the state is handing out cash down here. We haven't had a major state project in years. Unless you count US 35 which is a need and another topic.

Don't drag me into this, especially with a comment like that. I have no hatred for any part of this state and want to see every part of this state thrive. Too bad there are others on here who don't share the same sentiment.
