Based on the hype, I suspect that a flop is approaching. Could this be Marvel's "Green Lantern"?
In any escapist fantasy, there have to be conditions and characters that one wishes to experience, vicariously. Are they present in B.P.?
After a $41mil fourth weekend, Black Panther has grossed a whopping $1.11billion.
The film is poised to surpass Marvel's The Avengers ($632mil) to become the biggest superhero film in North America. It is also tracking to surpass Jurassic World ($652mil) and Titanic ($659mil) to become the third highest grossing movie in North America.
In worldwide grosses, the film is poised to surpass Iron Man 3 ($1.215billion) to become the highest grossing solo superhero film ever.

I didn’t realize that Jurassic World did so well (although I loved it and saw it three times in the theater). Hopefully the upcoming sequel won’t suck!
Not to derail this thread but before the movie came out, there were lame alt right or whatever they call themselves claiming that the movie is about them....well, they are back at it again. These guys are pathetic...at least they spent money to see the film.

Well, I'd argue that the isolationist/nationalist viewpoint of T'Chakka and Wakanda's history of self-centered isolationism is a shared characteristic with those folk.
That's another example of the "satire paradox."
A character in the movie makes the statement "Immigrants will just bring their problems with them"--and people suffering from the satire paradox will simply say, "Hey! They're validating our viewpoint!" without recognizing that the statement was written to be proven wrong.
It happened with the old "All in the Family" television show and it happened as well with Stephen Cobert's "Cobert Report."
Black Panther is at the top of the box office for the fifth weekend in a row. I am honestly not surprised because it is so far the best movie of 2018 by a long shot.
Black Panther is the first or second big budget, modern day Black superhero film. The other, Hancock (2008), grossed $400million overseas. BP is the second most anticipated film of 2018, and is tracking accordingly. Like Wonder Wonder, it could be a breakout movie. Unlike WW (and DCEU, for that matter), BP is expected to be good. And of course, it has the brand power of Marvel/Disney.
I thought Spawn (1997), and Steel (1997) were the first black superhero movies ever made.
Nobody else will say it, so I will, Pt. 1: for all the flak Gal Gadot sustained before the release of Wonder Woman, she shocked naysayers with her warm, spirited portrayal.
Nobody else will say it, so I will, Pt. 2: for all the flak Henry Cavill continues to sustain for his portrayal of Kal-el, Boseman's T'Challa is no less stoic.
Anyone agree?
