I think this year I'm going to do J-Horror movies. their American counterparts suck compare to the originals (I still get creeped out by Ringu and I've seen it dozens of times already!).
other standbys:
Nightmare Before Christmas (I have "This Is Halloween" as my ringtone this month )
The Shining (may try to watch the SK version as well, but I love Jack Nicholson in this movie!)
Amittyville Horror
My hubby and I just watched the original Thai version of Shutter... seriously scary. You should check out Phone, The eye, and Suicide club too. I love Asian horror and agree the remakes usually don't come close. I didn't even bother with the American remake of The Eye or Shutter.
I love Nightmare before Christmas... great ringtone!
I was scared to death when I first saw Poltergeist...the thing that is so scary is that is doesn't take place in some old gothic mansion, but in a modern suburban house. So it felt like something like that could happen anywhere.
What about that freaky clown doll in the brother's room

Those are some of my favorites too. Glad to see the appreciation for some Euro Horror classics. Suspiria is my favorite Dario Argento film. It's still scary even though I lost count how many times I've seen it.
Black Sunday is one of Mario Bava's best films. Creepy and atmospheric. Even though it was made in 1960, it has the look of the best made Universal horror films of the 1930's.
