2 different guys

it was the guy who sang those 2 songs who is dead and the main bandleader is still alive

the band started in 1971 and were finished by 80 or 81

Ok I want to take another stab but not give away the fort. Is he or is the media celebrating his most famous song to which this is the 40th anniversary of this?

the question i made is actually about the dead bandmember who died of the OD in 79. he was the one who sang the 2 songs about alcoholism and drug addiction

the bandleader is the one who is still alive

he led the band but the question wasn't about him per se

only the bandleader (who is still alive) could have had hits. he did have 2 hits 40 years ago but i don't know if they were his best

the guy who died did not have hits to my knowledge

it says he played with Pete Townsend's friends in 1969 to form the band Thunderclap Newman
