I'd give it to the 2000's by a long shot. 90's music started going really sour toward the end of the decade when the most popular music was terrible pop rap like Ja Rule, rap metal like Limp Bizkit and all the boy band pop like Backstreet/Nsync/98/LFO/Boyzone. The pop charts were almost completely void of anything decent during the decade, the most popular acts were Beyonce, Nickelback, Eminem, Black Eyed Peas and Justin Timberlake.

Rock music on the radio was horrible and rock radio is largely DOA in America because of it. Stale grunge retreads like Nickelback and Creed. Fossils riding on fumes like Chili Peppers, U2 and Foo Fighters. LINKIN PARK!

The 2010s have gotten much better, good indie songs are actually getting to the top of the POP charts (Fun, Gotye, Black Keys). Indie is killing those stale grunge era acts and bands like MGMT and Grouplove are getting airplay.

70s is probably second worst with those horrible mushy singer songwriter songs, disco and prog/dinosaur rock like Styx but they also had a lot of great music (funk, early new wave) and they gave us PUNK!

I second the vote for the late 90's - late 2000's (1998 - 2007) being the worst time period for popular music. This was the era of glam rap, nu metal, bad grunge copy cat bands (Nickelback, Creed, etc.), boy bands, and teen starlets. Just thinking about that time period makes me shudder in revulsion.

I give the vote to the 2000's. The 2000's had horrible music, and it's not getting any better in the 2010's

Using only the decades that I have experienced live.. I would put the 80s at the bottom. I probably like the 70s the most.. i think the 90s, especially the early grunge was great... THe jury is probably still out on the 00's... I simply haven't listened to it enough to get a feel for it yet... I am a decade behind i know but kids will do that to ya... especially when they come in pairs.

I was born in the early 80s so I can't really comment on music before 1980 which I don't really listen to regularly.

Overall, I'd say the 1990s are my least favorite and the 1980s my favorite. the 2000s are somewhere in between and the 2010s are too early to be judged. Some favorites from each decade -

1980s: New Order, the Cure, the Smiths, U2

1990s: Third Eye Blind, Everclear

2000s: Coldplay, The Killers, Death Cab for Cutie, Alkaline Trio

The 1980's was filled with a tremendous amount of one hit wonders in all genres.

If you judge a decade of music on what appeared on the charts then you truly aren't a music lover.

It would be like judging books by only reading what is on the best seller list.

I think the last two decades have best the best for music due to the unprecedented access listeners have to all kinds of music. You just have to take the time to find it since it's not spoon fed to you like it was in the 70's and 80's.

Oh and I'd put the 80's at the bottom. If I am to judge it on the charts alone it's the 2000's easy.

I was born in 1992, and all of my favorite music is from post 1960, so I'll rank from best to worst by decade not including the 2010's. Just going by music in the decades in general, and not by the charts.

1970's
1990's
1960's
1980's
2000's
