Unfocused, that surprised me Switch Into Glide was made that late, in 1980. I always thought it was a late 60's/early 70's tune. Wish I Had That Girl was fun to hear again Sluggo, never hear that one much anymore, very nice. These soft rocks songs may not have been obscure when they came out, but don't get as much play anymore.
The audio is overcompressed alas, but you get the general idea.
What Is This was a band formed in 1980 by Fairfax High School students Hillel Slovak and Jack Irons (both future Red Hot Chili Peppers members), and eventually included Flea and Anthony Kiedis (both also of RHCP)
I recall seeing this only once on MTV when it was new, but I managed to VCR it (I no longer have the tape). At the time, its weird quasi-psychedelic sound and imagery stood out; there wasn't a lot of psychedelic rock around in 1984. Unfortunately, for their next release, they changed directions and did a very bland version of "I'll Be Around" (originally by the Spinners) that did not jibe at all with this release. I forgot all about them for the next quarter-century, but then found the video on YouTube. This song, if you can find it in good fidelity, is worth having; the rest are pretty aimless and dull.
Harold Faltermeyer's "Axel F" is by no means obscure. The only movie that made more money than Beverly Hills Cop in 1984 was Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. "Axel F" is one of the decade's single most identifiable film/TV themes, right alongside Jan Hammer's theme for the smash hit series Miami Vice, and the subsequent single "Crockett's Theme" (which went to #1 in Europe).
Last year, La-La Land records issued separate remastered CD albums of Faltermeyer's musical scores for both Beverly Hills Cop and Beverly Hills Cop 2.
Between 1984-87, over 30 different 7" & 12" pressings of "Axel F"/"Shoot Out" were issued.
