Lead Vocalist, no answer. A lot of what they are judged on is the songwriters skill or the model looks.

Drums. Back when albums had liner notes and on live TV performances Steve Gadd was that face no matter the genre;

Guitar, Out of the jazz and blues fusion world Larry Carlton

Bass, be it on upright or electric, jazz or funk and I am sure he could do reggae or Latin if he was a studio cat Stanley Clarke

Singer - Roger Daltrey of The Who

Guitar - Jimmy Page - Led Zeppelin (much more versatile than Ed, so he's on the list)

Drums - Alex Van Halen - Van Halen (deepest groove, best snare sound ever, better time than Bonham)
honorable mention - Dave Grohl - Nirvana years. (great energy and very dynamic)

Bass - Jack Bruce - Cream

I gotta add one here:

Back-up vocals - Mike Anthony - Van Halen (it aint VH without Mikey)

Guitar (alive) Steve Vai
Guitar (deceased) Jimi Hendrix or Stevie Ray Vaughn

Bass - Flea or Stanley Carke

Drums - Travis Barker. Not that big of a fan of his group's music, but the guy is flat out a great drummer.

Singer - Cant decide on this one.

Gosh this is so subjective....especially vocals. I mean...Joplin? Yikes. Never could understand the appeal of that voice.

Best Guitarist-Jerry Garcia
Best Drummer-Art Blakey
Best Bassist-Victor Wooten
Best Lead Singer (this one's hard, because it's so subjective) but if I HAVE to- Otis Redding

That would be an INSANE super group.

OK...I'm going to go with this list in the Rock 'n' Roll Genre...and please forgive if I cannot narrow it down to just one guy in each category, but I will try my best to keep it short...

Guitarist--Jimi Hendrix (50 years later and guys are still trying to copy and interpret his music); Joe Satriani (for sheer technical brilliance); Mark Knopfler (a personal favorite because I just dig the way he sounds!)

Lead Singer--Freddie Mercury--I have always claimed he had the best voice ever in rock and I always will. So good he could have sung--and did!--Opera.

Bassist: Tough pick. For all around music talent ya gotta go with Paul McCartney, right? But for just Bass playing skills? I think maybe John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin. Also Geddy Lee. Oh, and maybe John Entwistle.

Drummer: My favorite has always been Keith Moon; But for pure technical brilliance--and boy,Ido mean brilliance: Neil Pert.
