Hello,

My family and I will be moving to Nashville between 19 May - 1 Jun 12. We will have a 1st grader and a pre-k student as well as a 1 year old. We are planning a visit the weekend of 5 May. Here is some info about what we want:

1. Family friendly neighborhoods with a great Ele school
2. Nice rental home between 2200-3000 sq feet; budget is max at $1800 a month; houses that are not on top of each other
3. Close to husbands job near Interstate 40 and Bailey Parkway; max commute of 15 minutes if possible
4. Close to a gym or a park or trails.

Here are a few questions I have:

1. What is the best school district?
2. What are the req for Pre-K? Free?
3. Are their neighborhoods to avoid or cities to avoid?

thanks in advance for ur input

I'd probably look out in Mt. Juliet given your pre-reqs.

1) Williamson County has the "best" test scores in the state, but Sumner, Rutherford and Wilson (Mt. Juliet) county are also strong on the list of "best" test scores.

2) Pre-K is only available for poor children. If you don't qualify then you'll have to pay for pre-k. Lots of churches run pre-k programs. Most are under $300/mo for a couple days a week.

3) everyone will have differing opinions on which to avoid. Metro Nashville has some very good schools and some very bad schools, but it can be hard to figure that out if you are coming from out of the area.

Not sure you'll find 3,000 sq ft for $1800 but I guess it depends on the area. A 1500 sq ft house in Franklin runs about $1400 - $1700. Maybe you'll find a house that has been for sale for a long time and the owners are willing to rent it cheaper?

You can try this website:

Apartments for Rent - PadMapper Apartment Search for Oodle, Apartments.com, Rent.com, Kijiji, and Craigslist Apartments

Put in your rent budget and see what comes up!

A 15 minute max commute will be extremely difficult unless you'll be working abnormal hours.

^ What they said. Mt. Juliet is the closest good suburban school zone to the airport area, but depending on where in Mt. Juliet you are and where, exactly, the workplace is, 15 minutes may be optimistic.

But if you're planning to rent first, Hermitage is also a viable option. A lot of people who live in Hermitage like their elementary schools and middle school, it's the high school that's considered a problem. Your kids are a long way off from that, so you at least have the option of living closer to work while you figure out where you'd like to buy.
