nowhereman - find las vegas on a map. now look west. pahrump is an hour west of vegas. nye county is the largest county in nevada & has a population of ~50k for the whole county. these are the main towns in the county, there are others, but are much smaller:

pahrump = largest population, ~40k
beatty = pop ~1500
amargosa = pop ~800
tonopah = county seat, pop ~2500

depending on which town you decide to live in, the housing prices will differ greatly - which also means, your ability to find a job or medical facilities or stores will factor in. for example: beatty & amargosa don't have proper grocery stores. beatty has a dollar general but doesn't have a bank. amargosa has a bank, but not a dollar general or medical. housing prices will be cheaper in these locations.

pahrump housing depending on how much land, if it's a stick built or a manufactured home, $250K + up. because we are the most populated town, with the most ammenities & the closest to vegas, we have the most expensive homes.

Nye County does have some variety. I recently visited Nye while at the Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park up in the top western corner of the county - it is a four and a half hour drive of over 230 miles from Pahrump. Tonopah the county seat is also very different than Pahrump.

I don't use those places so it really doesn't matter. I do however shop at the Nellis AFB Commissary. From Pahrump it is right at 90 minutes to that side of Las Vegas, about as far from Pahrump as you can get and still be in Las Vegas.

Running through Red rock Conservation area and then down Charleston Blvd you will have those stores less than an hour away, plus many more.

All is all, Pahrump is close enough to go the LV whenever the desire hits but far enough away to not make it a regular trip and it keeps my kids from driving out to visit a lot.

Do it in 80 minutes if you work out the route and it is not rush hour.

20 years ago I had 3 kids from Pahrump in my Spanish 1 class at the community college. They claimed to do it in 45 to 50 minutes.

45 mins is still doable - in the right conditions. gotta start from the south side of town (like mtn falls), gotta make the trip during non-rush hour times & your final destination cannot be anywhere on the east side of vegas

And I like Pahrump. The people I met 20 years ago in Pahrump when fighting the well stuff were very nice. They were however pretty much all inclined toward rich. One guy had a barn that would have been an upgrade for my wife and I and we are a long way from poor.

The block for us against Pahrump or similar is the medical thing. I am clearly a basic case and my spouse likes the fact she can load me into a wheelchair and dump me at Mountain View in 5 minutes or less. Of course it may not work but that is one of the standard rules of being an Octogenarian.
