I spent the first 50 years of my life with hardly any idea where my heritage originated. I became involved 7 years ago. Since then, I've learned of my Acadian decent, the extreme hardships of my ancestors and how very fortunate I am to be here today. It's quite a story and I enjoy sharing it with others who are not aware of the Acadian deportation.
my friends once described me as having so many hobbies, it's like trying to juggle with a lapfull of balls of yarn! Personally, I don't see what's wrong with having a choice of things to do
currently: I sew and sometimes compete costumes - both historical dress outfits and SF/F costumes. I also co-own probably the biggest website on how to make costumes and analyzing movie costumes (largely Lord of the Rings).
I inherited my grandmother's lifetime work of genealogy and occasionally do something with it (it's actually quite fascinating. she took quite a few lines very far back).
I'm having a grand time making hats (both costume and regular).
I've been known to enter my cats in cat shows, I have made baskets both out of reed and out of willow, years ago I played recorder and guitar - though not at the same time, I like to read - mostly mysteries or Fantasy, and I was an historical re-enactor (like the Civil War or Rev War folks - but for Viking age). I've tried pottery and leatherwork, but have not done very well with those so they are only as needed if I can't find someone else.
YOU WANNA TALK ABOUT HOBBIES, my wife has more hobbies than i have fingers and toes. LOL we have a room i set up just for her so she can be organized and have a plce to keep all her stuff. she does everything from scapbooking to polymer clay to plastic canvas. there aren't to many things she cant do. but me i just work on cars for a hobbie and collect tools. LOL
I like anything crafty. I'm a newbie at making Cedar Oak lamps because i have so many cedar trees on my land in TN. I decided to try to be creative with it. Here's my first lamps i made for my brother and sister before and after pictures.
And i enjoy making these christmas balls for the holiday season. My ex-sister in law asked me to make her new family some balls in silver and blue for her christmas tree theme.
First and foremost, I'm a musician. I've been playing most of my life, with the emphasis on drums. I also play guitar and a little bass. I had been playing in a few church bands recently, but now I'm down to one (every Sunday). I'm in the early stages of forming a Christian rock band to tour locally. I'm very dedicated to youth ministry and the importance of God to our teens. I guess it's grown beyond just a "hobby".
As mentioned in another thread, I collect Warner Bros. cartoons. I have a large collection on all types of media. I have rare recordings of Mel Blanc doing improv and some stuff on Super 8. Recently I've been converting stuff from other media to DVD to preserve it for a long time.
Like JFR, I also love cars. I've been in the auto industry for over 20 years. I've turned wrenches, but I have been in the parts industry now for 18 years. I've had all manner of cars, over 100 in all. I also love motorsports of all kinds with World Rally racing being my favorite.
Lastly, I like to go off-roading. I have a Honda 4-wheeler and a Kawasaki KDX220 trail bike that I take to the Berkshires and have fun on the trails with. I've had motorcycles a good deal of my life and really enjoy riding. My next endeavor is to take my Nissan Pathfinder off road. I'm starting to set it up with a suspension lift and larger wheels. Then I can tackle some real trails.
hey, brfry. this is the only thing i ever did off roading in. let me tell you it was some serious off roading. also glad to hear you are doing stuff with todays youth, they need alot of guidances.
