My family lived in Hillsborough in the 80s and 90s. The cutoff date was Oct 1 then. I don't know what it is now but they were very strict about the date. My brother and I both had December birthdays and our parents sent us to private school to start kindergarten at age 4. We had a SAHM so we could have stayed home, but that's not what they wanted. I graduated in the top 10 of my class in HS, college, and professional school and was often the youngest in the class but I didn't think anything was wierd about that. My brother is still in college and will graduate at 21, but he didn't have any problems in school related to the age factor (he had other health issues that caused some problems for a few years in his teens).

I never felt socially immature because I knew better than to fall into stupid peer pressure traps in high school and college. Like people have said, someone has to be the youngest. I have several good friends (at least 5 off the top of my head) who started kindergarten at the age of 4 in private schools before joining their public school classmates in various New Jersey school districts in the 80s. They were always very bright in school, went on to be well adjusted at some of the best colleges out there, and as adults they now have succesful careers. We are all in our late 20s.

Like the OP, our parents are Indian. If we had a family discussion today on the red-shirting issue that is so prevalent now, they would brush off the idea as ridiculous. Their decision to not red-shirt us was because they could have cared less about the social nuances of attending school (size of kids, peer pressure, athletic abilities, adjustment issues etc.). Their focus was always on the education going on at the school. I wonder if red-shirting is a more of a cultural issue here in the US.

Like I said I am merely posting to demonstrate that it is not b/c someone is acting entitled that they desire their child to start kindergarten at 5 1/2 vs 4 1/2 - in many circles in this very state that is the norm & the alternative is considered unusual. If others feel differently that is fine - they have been exposed to a different norm, but it doesn't invalidate everyone else's experience or make their purposes insidious.

I'm in the same boat for my kid...Need to find a public/catholic school (born after 10/15) which can give admission in NJ. Please suggest me asap. I'm looking for a school in bergen/passaic county

I saw the comments from others about holding a kid for one year, but in my case, it's matter of few days (born just few days after 10/15). Also, my kid goes to day care continously from last 2-1/2 years...So already mature enough to give any kind of test to get admission.

Thanks
