1. i fought a ticket in nyc and won. the alternative is to just plead guilty and you are guaranteed that you lose. might as well give it a shot.
2. i cant believe this notion that once you violate the rule they can fine you any amount and its ok. there should be some acceptable limit.
It's not "any amount"- it's the amount that's clearly delinieated in the law that's quoted in the letter. The court didn't make up some random amount- they applied the formula that the law requires, and sent a bill. Case closed.
you people are exactly what is wrong with this country.
You're going to have to elaborate on that one for me.
Are you saying that you don't owe the money? You didn't violate the law? The law is stupid? It's not "fair" because "everybody speeds"?
Ohh, I forgot- from the thread about getting ticketed in the park- "I have a brain and can think for myself. Don't need anyone taking my money when I did nothing wrong", right????

Lol. Agreed. NYS is fleecing you. Check with a lawyer. I am not sure how they can suspend your DL in NY as you have a NJ DL. I know NJ counts each NY violation as 2 points and that is the point total I would worry about.

formula? it seems to me that they probably just went with something they figured was not offensive enough that they could do it. im referring to the legislature, not the court that simply followed the law.

Well, that piece of legislation was voted on by the governing body and approved. Who knows how they came up with the amount, but it is what it is, and when you really look at it, it's not a terribly high amount. We talking about a penalty that gets applied only once one goes over 6 points, which is sometimes considered a "habitual offender"- maybe if they get hit in the wallet harder, they'll avoid getting more tickets.

I don't live in NY. I did not agree to these laws.
I think two minor traffic stops should not result in a man having to shell over $1000 to a state he does not even reside in.
There is no public transit for 90% of the people in the united states... not everyone lives in a city.
Maybe more of the 90% should move? The choice of where you live is in your hands. If you want to live and work somewhere where it is not necessary to drive a car, you can.
I really dislike driving- the cost of gas, tickets, insurance, etc. is too high.
