from the article you linked to

"But Emert couldn't provide any identification and asked the cop if they could go to his nearby home in Midwood to get his license. The officer instead ordered Emert to violate Jewish law by writing down his name and address."

it sounds like this was not standard procedure, but emert CHOSE to ask him to write his name, but could easily have written it down for him.

This could be seen as like a cop in a hispanic nabe refusing to speak Spanish out of principle. It just seems at odds with the spirit of community policing.

I feel that the officer should not have to be penalized for ticketing the Rabbi. BEcause of this ticket he was sent to one of the most crime ridden precencts in Manhattan. No one is above the law and no religion should not have more authority over the law this goes for all religions. I know that NYC is a Jewish town, and Im sure all of us who live in this city has some Jewish influence in us one way or another. Jews make up a good portion of the city and states population so its important that certain statuets dont apply to these people. I hope that the talmud does not superced the laws of the federal government. We also can not forget that Otrodox Jews in Midwood also have there own law enforcement and thier own ems seperate from the cities unit.

Well your quote is already setting the wrong tone and part of the problem:

A: What cop would entertain the idea of going to someone's house, wherever that would be? Who has the time, the inclination? Why is it seemingly expected that this cop should drop everything and go to his house? Not sure what cops you are used to dealing with but it doesn't happen with anyone. Somehow the argument is that the Officer didn't bend over backwards quite enough to accomodate the Orthodox Jew therefore he was penalized. He should have went to his house but chose not to! Because clearly they do it for everyone else right! And he could have written the name for him, but chose not to! How dare this officer! Because clearly they write the names for everyone else right! Clearly he is an anti-semite by doing his job?

B: As a result of A above, the cop did NOT order the Orthodox Jew to violate Jewish Law/whatever, he told him to write his name and address down! So the question is this, which is more important and what law should this Orthodox Jew be following: His Jewish Law, or the laws of the city of NY. And furthermore, which law should the OFFICER be following and enforcing, the laws of the city of NY or Jewish Law?

This article is leading us to believe the Cop should be following and yielding to the laws of Orthodox Judaism, with the laws of the USA taking a distant second place. This is fundamentally wrong with ANY religion. Exactly why the officer "should have known" to yield to Orthodox Jews and compromise his authority is beyond me and the real problem here. Why people are trying to make the argument that the officer is wrong because he ultimately chose to do his job is kinda ridiculous.

At the end of the day, it is the Officer vs the Orthodox Jews, and the Orthodox Jews win, again and again. Wonder what happened with those bike lanes in Billyburg...NYC residents and Hipsters vs Orthodox Jews..guess who won there? Lesson learned: NYC residents and Officers should yield to Orthodox Jews, or else.

PS- had a cop chosen not to speak Spanish out of principle there would be no penalty or even a question about it. And certainly not a news article about it.

From top to bottom this city is run by mobs of all kinds. Some are just more powerful than others. Like with the education chancellor fiasco, all those involved were friends of each other and of similar ethnic background.
Wouldn't be surprised if this was retribution against the cop.

Allen it is clear this is retribution and a warning to cops and city residents: Yield to Orthodox Jews or else. It ain't the first time and not the last. You should have seen the NYC Brooklyn Bike tour held every year...it is advertised well in advance and some streets are closed for a short time as bikers pass through. Everything was great and the only problems occurred...guess where...in the Hasidic and Orthodox neighborhoods where there were massive confrontations with cops and bike riders. They did not want to be inconvenienced and were literally attacking cops and bike riders...I have never seen anything like it. And of course...they were appeased, as usual. Ridiculous.

Thread closed. This thread has veered from discussing a specific incident to bashing an entire community.
