Isn't NYC wonderful? Where the law abiding citizen has to decide to be a perp just to exercise their natural born inherent human right to self-defense.
You can carry a screwdriver, hammer or baseball bat. You pretend you are going to do some construction or go play baseball. Seriously I have done this, just carry in a bag.
You can carry pepper spray. It has been legal in New York for quite a while.
You can't order it online to be shipped to NY/NYC or in general though as that's not permitted.
You have to buy it in person within New York from either a firearms dealer or pharmacy.
You have to be over 18 to purchase and have committed no felonies.
John Jovino sells it in Manhattan but it's expensive. A lot of pharmacys carry Mace brand pepper spray.
Sabre red is a very good and strong brand which many law enforcement agencies use.
One should become familiar with its proper use and with developing good situational awareness in general so you can avoid being the victim of an assault etc in the first place which is the best self defense.
I would much rather explain why I had to defend myself than to explain why I was an unarmed sitting duck in the ER. I'm sure the fine for having a self defense means is cheaper than a trip to the ER by a long shot (no pun intended).
it may be cheaper than the er but it that visit can be a whole lot cheaper than legal fees if you are charged with escalating a situation because the action you took or the weapon you used may not be justified .
even if you are found innocent there can be a civil suit that can cost you everything you own .
so from a financial standpoint that er visit may be the real bargain .
despite what you may think in your head at the time , very few self defense shootings are ever just black and white . they are just different shades of gray . they can require plenty of expensive lawyers to keep you from being the bad guy .
everything in self defense law is based on even steven . he punched you , you can punch him , he had a stick , you can have a stick , etc ,etc . and it makes for a lot of un-fair outcomes for the good guy .
