Chicago destroyed it's housing projects. How did that work out? They moved them to working class neighborhoods and suburbs which became the new ghettoes and Chicago has a murder rate three times that of NYC.
There was probably a way to do it, but Chicago did it in an extremely rapid fashion without much planning on how it would pan out. Had they done it at a quarter the speed with some semblance of a plan for mixed income housing replacements ready to go, then it might have been alright.
Agreed...people that wanna talk about destroying the projects would never go there and say that in person...and I'm not even talking about the fear of being physically attacked, I just challenge you people to actually go there and try to tell somebody they don't deserve to live somewhere simply because you want to put a whole foods and some coffee shops there... While these people might be ghetto and you hate them, these are black and Latino communities that care for each other and make the best of what they have. And lastly if you were gonna make a downtown bx it would be by the courthouses in the 160's near Yankee stadium. Its a decent area with different types of transportation access and like I said the government buildings are already there

So just because people want to see Bronx have job growth, world class atrractions, luxury buildings built atop grass fields, or unused parking lots near the Harlem Riverfront that means they are racist?
I'm sorry if you want these people to stay poor and live in poverty from generation to generation but neighoborhoods evolve. People's mindset should as well.
I do like the idea of job centers being built to help people in low income neighoborhoods to learn valuable - higher than minimum wage - job skills, and have job placement.
Enough of this "they are tearing down our neighborhood." Those are government-owned projects. Time to loosen the welfare chain. Poor people have more opportunities than people in 3rd world countries. No more excuses.
Want to be able to stay in your gentrifying neighborhood? Take out a loan/go to school, vocational school, online school, etc. There are ways to get educated/ways to make more money.
If people with more money wanted to move in a cheap area, they can do that. No need to get mad. Don't like it? Then change your financial situation. Money talks. That's the name of the game in life. Hard truth..

Your ideal for the Bronx is not only simplistic, its quite short sighted and narrow. People don't need to go to the Bronx to see world class attractions and luxury buildings when they can do that in Manhattan. Also, lots of people don't live in poverty from generation to generation and many often leave such places if they can afford to.
What people like you don't realize is that the Bronx is more than projects, "ghetto people," and social ills of the nation and society.

Not every last square inch of NYC needs to be gentrified, there's more than enough of that already
