Hello, I'm an amateur photographer and want to go take photos in those neighborhoods. They get a bad rap but I never been there myself so I was wondering if it's safe for a female to wander around those areas with a big ass camera, haha. Thoughts/tips/suggestions very appreciated. Thanks.

Well Hammels is a housing project (the fully red brick buidlings in the 80s-70s near the bayside) so I wouldn't wander within its property, it doesn't have a good reputation. The rest of the neighborhood (Rockaway Beach) is decent though I don't see you having an issue.

I grew up in the Rockaway Beach section but I don't know much of Arverne or Edgemere, Seventh Floor or Coney may be able to tell you more.

These are some pics I took.

Pics 18- 27 in this thread are of the Edgemere neighborhood, which is a sub-section of Far Rockaway:

These pics are of pics taken mostly in the neighborhood of Arverne after Hurricane Irene. Pic #5 was taken in the neighborhood of Edgemere:

I just got mugged on the Coney Island boardwalk this afternoon, so I guess I should just avoid Edgemere altogether.

I feel your pain. I once got mugged too while taking photos a few years ago.

Hi sweet adeline, Well Im an amateur photographer myself who lives in the rockaways. I'm sorry that happened to you but the crime rate in the rockaways is far far lower than that of Coney Island. Still, a "female with a huge camera" is quite tempting for the would be mugger. If you partner up with someone you will be alright in the rockaways. Hint, while taking the train to Far Rockaway do not get off the Broad Channel stop. Continue over to the next stop, Beach 67th St, and get off there. You will only be two short blocks from the beach and the area is way nicer. Hint two, carry a camera bag and dont flaunt an expensive camera with expensive lens attached as tourist in Manhattan tend to do. I myself carry a Lowepro model 200 (ideal for men) that I can swing towards the front and have quick access to my camera in seconds. There are similiar models for women. Good Luck.

Default visiting Arverne and Edgemere

I grew up in the housing projects but moved out in 1966.

I want to walk around Arverne Projects and Edgemere early in the morning on my next trip to New York.

I am comfortable with the residents but IS IT DANGEROUS AND STUPID??
