Quite honestly it is going to be interesting to see how all this so called "inequality" of income or whatever plays out over coming years/decades.
Incomes here in NYC as elsewhere on average for many aren't keeping up with rising COL, and New York is becoming a high COL place on steroids.
Next technology and other advances have changed and rapidly are changing all sorts of employment. Many places need less workers and those who remain often are broken down into two camps; those who are highly educated and or have in demand skills, versus those who do not. The former are doing well enough for themselves, the rest not so much.
Being as this may know people who are doing very well with everything from dog walking/pet sitting to private laundress. So guess it really comes down to what is one's skill set, and how one can make it work.
Particularly in the East and the West, where prices are high all up and down the coast.
Cities that used to be affordable, like Chicago, forget about it now.
And the affordable cities that are left, maybe Akron, OH, you probably can't find a job even though you can still get a place for less than $1,000 a month in those cities.

To be fair there are small towns in ALL states.
Yes, people have jobs in Ohio. Yes, people can find jobs in Ohio.
The US is a huge country. Things get expensive when lots of people try to live in the same small spaces.
there is nooooo real opportunity in most of the country compared to here and a few other major cities ... odds are if you fail at earning decent money here you ain't doing it anywhere else either

It's not about money it's about quality of life. In Manhattan a studio can cost 3,000 dollars a month. In much of the city, you see 40 year olds with roommates. This is unheard of in most of the country.
In your life have you ever even lived in other parts of the country? Would you really know what people are doing in other parts of the country, outside of the news?
I can't believe I actually agree with NYwriter. Most of the country is doing quite well actually. If you do just a little bit of traveling, like I do, you will see how much cleaner, newer, faster, better run everything is compared to NYC.
Even the workers you deal with are generally happier and friendlier than what you encounter in this city. The people in NYC you see on the subways and streets look miserable and unhappy.
You come back to NYC and it looks almost third world, dirty, old and neglected.

yes we lived part time in PA . we would have made a full time move , except while we could make do on about 30% less income , pay was 1/2 for what i do . we had a better deal here. the investment opportunity we had here in manhattan real estate was suburb as well . had we lived elsewhere we never would have had this opportunity because there are things unique to nyc that create this opportunity
