I don’t buy that it was unintentional. A political and social decision was made to handle it this way and probably the perps will be fired quietly. Maybe they worry that there would be copycats if this went through the criminal justice system and since the cops are ok there was nothing to gain from criminal charges.

Why would it make sense for NYPD to cover up a poisoning of their own? I would think the much more effective thing to do would be to have as much blanket coverage about this and how things are well out of hand as that would garner a lot more sympathy for police departments.

The copycat concern is valid, so I suspect you may be correct.
In addition the force will, no doubt, avoid the entire chain.

Wait, are you guys saying that the police are doing a cover up?
Police departments have in recent years avoided naming mass shooters in fear of copycats, but they don’t simply opt to not charge anyone and declare things accidental unless you are suggesting that there is another level of practices going on that seems like it’d be illegal and would be truly a slippery slope.

In this rioting month, covering up would be prudent.
The main goal should be no other cops poisoned.
I'd assume in a force this large, families of cops along with them number hundreds of thousands. That's a ton of Shake Shack business gone, which is the best penalty. That's much more than a few Shack Shack thugs fired.

It would be illegal, wouldn't it? Are you saying Shake Shack is doing the cover-up or the police are?
