Yes they do, the vendors of those cards have to verify your social security number and peronal information with the federal government
i've bought these cards dozens of times and never given anyone any of my information
to be fair i haven't bought any in about six months so maybe that's changed
I thought that metro cards were sold at check cashing places and the like. In italy you buy from the nearby stores or stores in the station. Maybe that could be an option

which brand? green dot definitely goes through it
The biggest loophole on cash cards to avoid personal info is getting rebates that are issued on visa cash cards
This wouldn't affect cash payments but if you have a Metrocard I'd suggest getting the Easypay Metrocard which just automatically refills your card when it reaches a certain amount, that way you never run out of funds on a card. I've had the same Metrocard for 3 years because mine is linked to my transit credit card from work. So when it hits $20 it automatically refills it (I think for $45 is the amount I chose).

Obviously, you are unaware of how many people are unbanked or underbanked in this City, which is the point. Besides, no one should be forced to into Easypay because the MTA can't keep their machines working properly.

That's why I said it wouldn't affect the cash payments, to acknowledge that's not the problem I was trying to solve. I'm just seeing other people in this post who are talking about their experiences with their cards, who have banks/credit cards, and offering them another solution.

I think people want there to be the option to pay cash. I do even though I don't ever use cash at the Mta stations.
Many of my neighbors don't have bank accounts or credit cards. Believe it or not it's common for low income/working class. As long as we have money people should be able to use it at businesses. When and if the government decides to get rid of money then that's another story.

I don't disagree at all. There should be a cash option. I was just offering the Easypay option for people who don't tend to use the cash but are refilling their cards at the machines with a credit/debit card.

If you're paying as you go, it makes much more sense to just use tap and go with OMNY, which is what I do. I stopped refilling Metrocards once OMNY became available and it has been fantastic. Since I am working from home, I don't buy passes now, but even so, I don't like anything refilling automatically unless I'm getting something out of it, which is not the case with the MTA. They are just getting my money in advance that way. If they were giving a bonus, sure, but with no bonus, forget it.
