So you are blaming Mayor Bloomberg? Does this mean you gave Mayor Giuliani high marks? Because he is alleged to have gotten a handle on crime in New York. Given a choice, I don't think I would like to see Rudy Giuliani return as our Mayor.

Not to misquote Freakanomics, but murder only measures how many people died, not how many people were victims of violent crimes. Drops in murder rates may have more to do with better emergency medicine than less crime.

Anyone have overall violent crime stats?

There is no drop i nmurder rates. There is an 8% increase despite better emergency medicine. I'm sure there are violent crime stats out there somewhere

Well thats why there should be stringent laws on who can get one. There is already is enough guns in the streets on the hands of wrong people, need to get them onto the right hands, crime may not go down but sure as hell wont happen in someones home.

As usual this story is all nonsense and hype..so let's bring it back to reality about crime in NYC.

1-2007 was the LOWEST crime rate on record in the past 40 years.
2-The Crime rate has been trending DOWNWARD for the past 15 years.
3-2008 in fact had a 3% OVERALL decline in crime as compared to the already record breaking low crime rates of 2007.
4-The 8% increase in the murder amounts to about 15 more murders, and the increase is based on the already record low crime rate of 2007. This would be, in facts, a NORMAL variation in the crime rate, as crime rates don't always go down every year. It varies, but what is most important is the TREND, and the TREND is decidedly DOWNWARD, despite the hype, and despite the BS about crappy/poorly trained officers.

As usual, when one actually reflects on the information, one sees that its a bunch of hype..sells papers..gets people talking..but that's about all it is. The bottom line is this: NYC has never been safer, and any variations like an 8% increase in the murder rate is really just a normal variation. When we see these increases 3 and 4 years in a row..then you may have something there. Until that time, stick with the current, accurate assessment of the crime situation in NYC, it is down another 3% from the record low crime rate of 2007. Period.

Overall crime is way down compared to the bad days but the party can't last forever. Especially when you do not invest in those who brought the crime down in the first place. ie The NYPD
It appears your knowledge of crime in this city is based on the numbers you read in the papers and your personal experience. All those wonderful stats you quoted have been sanitized to make you feel better. I work in federal law enforcement and what I see first hand gives me a very different picture. One that has not been fixed to keep the property values up and the tourists coming back for more. The murder rate as well as rape and robbery are up because they are difficult to "fix" statistical speaking. The pesky family members get mad when little johnny gets shot five times in the head and the city calls it a suicide. Also other crimes that the city tells you are down are really up but have been cleaned up so to speak. The crimes are reported but they have been downgraded to discon or lost property. The cities lack of investment in law enforcement and very poor leadership have created a downward trend in the quality of life for new yorkers and life expectancies in some areas of the city. This current trend will continue until the murders come over to the southern part of Manhattan.

By the way, a 15 year old girl was stabbed to death last night in queens. RIP and god bless.

Giuliani let the police do their job which got the crime in hand but he also hurt the police department a great deal. I did not care for the man. But if I had to pick between giuliani and bloomberg I would have to go with the goul
man. He didn't pander to poverty pimps, unlike the current spineless wimp in the mayors office.

Agree, I can't stand the man but he did clean up the city. I'd rather have him than Bloomberg.
