Bensonhurst isn't as solidly Italian as it used to be (no neighborhood in New York City has ever been static; change is the name of the game every two or three generations!) There are large Asian and Russian communities there now.
Walked on 86st street Monday and heard numerous conversations in this dialect. The clothing (but the short skirts on women where plentiful) has changed but the deep Brooklyn accent is alive and well.
I have been living in Bensonhurst for 19 years already. The whole Italian "stereotype" is gone.
86th Street is a mixture of everything. A lot of Chinese are buying the newer homes, so they are here to stay. Proir to that it was Russians comming all over, but just renting. Like other posters say, the Italians mostly move to Staten Island.
It is a sleepy neighborhood, nothing exciting happens here, it is not "hip" and not "trendy" and it has everything you need for day to day living, and because it is not hip & trendy it is still affordable for the average person to live comfortable without spending 3 paychecks worth for rent to rent a glorified tenement.
I have family in Bensonhurst. It seemed nice. That Yusef Hawkins murder was terrible. I heard that kid that shot him got over 30 years. Should have been electrocuted if you ask me. But anyway, back to Bensonhurst. My expreience was people tended to be friendly, somewhat reminiscient of smaller towns because people actually talked to strangers there in a polite way.
Yes, Bensonhurst is more Russian now than Italian. Mod cut: not necessary.

Reason: Not necessary, thanks.
