OP, you go to your friend and you say "Hey, I want to make you a T-shirt with my new (whatever the heck you are making it with). What size T-shirt do you wear and do you like T-shirts extra big on you?"
You simply can not make clothing for anyone without getting their size. Unless you are best friends with her sister, you must ask your friend. I can't imagine getting huffy over a friend asking my size because they want to make me a shirt.
You can not guess what size a person wears and if you are going to the effort of making the darn thing, you want it to fit so she can wear it.
A woman who's close to me received a couple of nice tops for Christmas, the gifts of a close relative and his tiny girlfriend, who selected them. Nice, that is, except the tops were three sizes too big for the recipient, who is average size, and were styles and colors she would never select for herself.
Evidently the teeny-tiny gf perceives those larger than herself as enormous.
So the recipient had to take the tine to exchange the billowy blouses after the holidays. At least she bought herself something she really wanted and needed as a result.
Giving clothing, unless you are sure of the recipient's tastes and size, is a dubious proposition. If you are determined to give someone wearing apparel, at least get their size right and be sure they like the style you select.
And make sure it can be exchanged. The woman in the above scenario lucked out in this regard, at least.
I recommend getting her a gift that is not clothing. Take it from someone whose soon to be mother in law gets her a sweater every year for Christmas, and they never fit.
