I am in my 60s although I don't think it necessarily matters, since the people who called me Sweetheart, Darlin, and Sweetie, called others the same thing.
My dental hygienist kept calling me Sweetheart. The drunken guy at the liquor store calls me Darlin', and the waitress at lunch today called everyone she waited on Sweetie.
It drives me nuts. Maybe its a southern thing?
It can be very southern, sounds like it is in your case. Whether or not it would bother me where I live I guess depends on the gender of the person. Another woman, doesn't bother me but from a guy would seem inappropriate.
I was raised in the south and this is a very common thing and my grandmother who was also raised in the south always said sweetheart ...it is just a southern thing and I would not let it bother me .
Embrace it! There isn't enough love in the world these days and if a Southern woman is giving you those endearments, she at least likes you.
As a Southern girl myself, I really miss hearing them.
