Just your hospitality in letting a person stay in the guest room is plenty. Maybe find out if they have any food allergies or preferences & make sure you have some breakfast or other foods in the fridge. Have fun!! I personally love fresh flowers, but some people may be allergic.

Oh I've already started cooking so there'll be plenty in the refrigerator...plus we will shop together...
Wow, lots of good ideas here. I never would have thought of a coffee/tea maker in the room. I'll bet that would be very appreciated by a lot of people.

Oooh, that's a really fun idea, Mikala. Anyone could provide items that their area is known for.
It's been mentioned over and over, but I really would love having a few "luxury" toiletries. People are often reluctant to pamper themselves, so that might be a surprising treat for them. And definitely tell them they're there for their use (ha, they're/there/their).
Greatblueheron, I get the feeling that your guest is going to have a very pleasant stay.
To answer the original question, I'd appreciate anything that doesn't have a strong scent - meaning NO flowers, candles, air fresheners, sachets, etc. For those of us with floral/scent allergies, that can make a stay very unpleasant! When I was staying at my father & step-mother's house last year, even the laundry detergent they used on the comforter made me sniffle all week. And I was too lazy to re-wash everything in there (with a scent-free detergent), so I just suffered through it.
Please keep that in mind for your house guests, because as nice as they might look, a lot of people are allergic to flowers & such... and they might not want to be rude by saying anything.

Bingo! Didn't see your post before I mentioned this.

Orchids are usually allergy-friendly, since they don't have much of a scent... so I think that's safe, and they're quite lovely too.
what would you most enjoy seeing in your guest room when you arrive?
Something pleasant, that would make you smile?
Some extra blankets and pillows. And a jar candle (with a candle lighter somewhere). I'd bring my own book. If I were staying with a friend, I'd probably want to be in the guest-room reading my book cuddled up with a blanket and a candle burning, but I'm anti-social so I probably wouldn't be staying at a friend's house anyway.
