Siemens Energy, which spun off from German-based tech entity Siemens in 2020, plans to add 559 jobs across Mecklenburg and Wake counties, Gov. Roy Cooper announced Tuesday.

As part of the project, the energy technology company will establish its first power transformer manufacturing facility in the U.S. in Charlotte's Steele Creek area. This will be an expansion at its current facility on Westinghouse Boulevard.

Why it matters: 475 of the jobs Siemens Energy is adding will be in Charlotte; 84 jobs will be in Raleigh. The state will provide nearly $10 million in incentives over 12 years to Siemens Energy if the company meets its hiring and investment targets.

Word is that the Raleigh jobs may be based in the North Hills Innovation District. That will definitely help jumpstart that development if that's the case.

Here is Brunswick County versus the state as a whole. People can draw their own conclusions on if they think the county is relatively senior.

I also never said it is bad that Brunswick is relatively old. It is an attractive retirement destination and will continue to grow due to the climate, location, and state tax situation compared to locations retirees or empty nesters lived prior. It is growing at multiple age ranges, just faster growth among the elderly pulling the median up. An example is from 2018 - 2022, the population of 20 - 39 years old increased 5,577 people while the population of people 70 and older increased 13,034.

Brunswick:
0 - 19: 15.4%
20 - 29: 7.7%
30 - 39: 10.5%
40 - 49: 8.7%
50 to 59: 13.4%
60 - 69: 21%
70 - 79: 18.3%
80+: 5.1%
Median age: 56.3 - oldest in the state

North Carolina:
0 - 19: 24.2%
20 - 29: 13.4%
30 - 39: 13.4%
40 - 49: 12.4%
50 to 59: 12.7%
60 - 69: 12.1%
70 - 79: 8.2%
80+: 3.6%
Median age: 39.2

A Japanese biotech manufacturer promises to build its first North American manufacturing facility in the Lee County seat of Sanford, with a plan to create more than 100 jobs over the next three years.

On Tuesday, the North Carolina Economic Investment Committee awarded an incentive grant to Kyowa Kirin, the most recent business from Japan to commit to the Tar Heel State. Its future Sanford site will produce trial drugs and commercial treatments, the state Commerce Department said.

Average wages at the incoming facility will be $91,500. The median household income in Lee County is $60,941, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Latest projects in Midtown Charlotte:

Final phase of the Canopy Realtor Association redevelopment adjacent to Pearl Park to become 450 residential units, a 150 room hotel, and 35,000 square feet of retail. Other structures in the development include the Midtown campus of Atrium Health, Solis Midtown apartments, and the new Canopy office.

Across Kenilworth, the final vacant plot at the Metropolitan in Midtown has kicked off to build a 27 story, 283 unit luxury apartment (sort of ugly IMO). Will be adjacent to Trader Joe's, the Sugar Creek greenway, restaurants, et. with sweeping views of Uptown.

The new medical school at the Pearl is also proceeding quickly. Students are set to begin their first year in 2025.

The 45 story apartment tower at the Queensbridge Collective development in South End Charlotte is starting to go vertical. 400 apartment units at 45 stories. Height will be 596 feet, to overtake The Vue as the tallest residential tower in the city and state, and sixth tallest building in the state. The Vue will have more overall floors still (51).

The companion office tower is seeking tenants before rising (42 stories at 557 feet). US Bank was rumored but may have pulled back with remote work trends + needing space sooner (some other towers are delivering earlier). They now employ about 1,200 people here in Truist's headquarters tower. Once their lease expires, Truist will likely kick the rival bank out and take over the space themselves.

That 27 story apartment building reminds me of the Westin Hotel at the convention center for some reason.
