When I was a child during the very early days of Vietnam (late 1950's), the newscasters would talk about Vietcong "guerillas" attacking whomever. I really thought we were fighting gorillas. It took me 30 years of living here before I learned that OBX was not a brand of sunglasses. I had a boss many years ago (with an MBA degree no less), who would say "misconscrewed" instead of "misconstrued"----we all politely suppressed our smirks during staff meetings.

I had a boss that was constantly misconscrewing over his employees. Maybe they went to the same school?

When I was a child and would hear someone say they returned something to a store and got their money back, I thought they got the actual bills and coins back that they had paid with.

Dragging this topic back to the NoVa specific, we've seen a lot of out-of-state posters write in:

"I am moving from XXXX and looking for a SFH with four bedrooms, a big yard, a safe neighborhood with great schools, within a ten minute walk of the Metro and I want to rent for no more than $800 per month or purchase for more than $220K. Where should I look?"

When I was a kid, I thought a bank would keep the actual money you deposited in a special box and that everyone who used the bank had their own "box." Once I got a few $2 bills for my birthday and deposited them into my savings account. I was devastated to learn later that I would not be getting them back!

I moved to NoVa as a child from a part of Maryland where there was more of a regional accent - recall politely asking if I could go to the fountain for some "wudder" and being told by a teacher to stand in front of the class and clearly pronounce "wa-ter".

If a teacher did that today, she or he would probably get disciplined for failing to recognize that's how kids speak when most of their neighbors sound like Barbara Mikulski.

That, and after moving back to this area later in life it took me years to realize all the healthy folks with the "26.2" bumper stickers weren't trying to point the rest of us to a Biblical verse.

It's the length of a standard marathon. The "13.1" stickers you often see around here are for half-marathons.

Often found on the same cars as those with OBX stickers.
