Long time resident. I always thought that DelMarVa specifically referred to the peninsula east of the Chesapeake Bay that contained all of Delaware and those parts of Md. and Va.. To me, DMV was always the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Also, the term "Northern Virginia" as commonly used, only includes the metropolitan counties, and does NOT include areas west of the Blue Ridge, such as Winchester - even though ironically Winchester is geographically the state's northernmost city.

I had never heard of DMV for DC / MD / VA until I read it here...I guess I'm too old school...and NoVA Community College used to be referred to as NoVaCoCo back many years ago...but many refer to it simply as NoVa now...

The area has been referred to as the DMV since the mid 2000's are the time I was in undergrad. And Northern Virginia has always been called NoVa since Ive been alive. Maybe its a generational thing.
