Also highly recommend taking a weekend trip here with 1-2 potential neighborhoods picked out, finding a realtor who will show you around for a few hours, and then hitting the bar scene or whatever works for the sights, especially the female sights. Do this after you've read up on the area, checked the relo calculators, etc.

Driving I-35 between Big D and Austin is a piece of cake. Driving either interstate to NYC is not. Think the little snarl around Flower Mound daily for the entire three hours (if you're lucky) or five hours (not so lucky and more typical).

Unlike Tejas, the locals in northern Virginia do not think of their dinky Toyotas and Hondas as replacement horses. The spirit of the ole West appears to have been left west of the Mississippi. Well west.

Also you might want to check out of the cost of child care. From your post that appears to be at least 2-3 years down the road. Let's just suggest it is not inexpensive.

Utilities in general are less. Electricity is a lot less and in general so is water. In northern Virginia we do not have the unregulated situation of electrical providers y'all have around Dallas. Many people prefer gas forced air heat as being the the least expensive; electric heat is second and oil heat is the highest.

The allergies to environmental things are about the same. Not quite as warm in the summer but just as humid. Buy a snow shovel as yes, it does snow on occasion.

Property taxes on real estate are less but there is a personal property tax on vehicles. It depends on the age of the car and somewhat accounts for seeing so many older vehicles on the roads.

Thanks for the heads up!

I had no clue, yea that's good to hear

Obviously I will need lighting/electricity/internet... I'm not a big cable guy but i have it in TX as a luxury(although I never use it lol)

That's extra great to hear on property tax for real estate as I didn't even know that. I understand and have heard about the tax on vehicles... that with the MUCH MUCH BETTER public transport in the Northeast, East Coast and Virginia area I can understand where the car culture is different... not a worry here as my car is BMW is paid off lol. I understand the drivers are much better up there as well. I am honestly a very good driver and ALWAYS signal(something my fellow Texans never learned apparently lol)

not looking for a trophy wife(way too many MRS type girls here.. it get easy and ... boring pretty quickly actually lol

I absolutely look forward to the lifestyle, culture and environment change. You'll see me sporting my pink custom/muscle fit Lacoste polo on weekends out by the East Coast soon then

Keep in mind that Lacoste is no longer considered posh.

Also try to separate out that TWO areas on the east coast: NYC metro ("Tristate") from DC metro. Calling them the same is the delta between Austin and Dallas.

If you care to wear a pink muscle shirt on the Joisey shore, you'll be straight out of central casting.

OP, I think you deserve some credit for wanting to go to a place with a very different culture and for being open to learning there. My advice would be to watch out for what I call Pond Enlargement Syndrome.

No, I'm pretty sure the OP thinks the DC Metro area is like living at a UVA fraternity....
