Saw this snippet in another thread and thought it'd make a thought-provoking topic for a thread. I remember hearing this statistic when we first moved here, but then again you hear a lot of things that may or may not be true.

So... what do you young singles think? Is it still true? Was it ever true?

"I don't know if this matters or not, but DC has the lowest ratio of single men to single women in the nation. For every 100 single women in Washington, there are only 93.4 men. Your odds get much better in Alexandria. I don't know why, it's just one of those funny things I've read in a few different places so I think it's probably true."

This is based on a larger study that found that the east coast has more single women and the west has more single men. But once you narrow the age range, the difference disappears.

I rather be on the east coast I guess.

That's no worry. In DC, there are enough married politicians of both parties who are more than happy to, ahem, take care of the other 6.6 women.

I've had resistance in the DC forum to my observation but for the size of DC and the population of middle-upper class whites in DC (compared to the established AA population), there seem to be a ton of gays in DC. I would think it would be easier to be gay and get a date than straight. (The Jefferson Memorial seems to be quite the hot spot-and I'm sure Jefferson would completely flip on that but I digress..) But I don't live or work in DC.

Hmmmm.... looks like good news for the guys!

Maybe I should tell my nephew to move down here. He's up at Rensselear, where it's 5 guys for every girl. He needs our warmer winters... and our warm Virginia women, too.

If you come out of the closet at the Jefferson Memorial, do you say "I hold these truths to be self evident....."

Ah, but when he moves down here, he'll hang out with other engineers (I'm assuming he's an engineer if he goes to RPI) and the 5:1 guys/girls ratio will still hold true.

This is why I think these stats are kind of meaningless. People mingle in social groups- it's not like all of DC is meeting together and pairing off.

Don't forget that young and single don't necessarily equate. There are a lot of people who are single or divorced/widowed who are well past 30.
