"Waikiki's International Market Place is a shopping mecca for souvenirs and Hawaiiana, wedged between high end retailers, but its days are numbered. Land owner Queen Emma Land Company is developing a shopping center there anchored by Saks Fifth Avenue."

Petition to stop redevelopment of International Market Place int - Hawaii News Now - KGMB and KHNL

Which would you prefer, the International Market Place or Saks Fifth Avenue?

What an opportunity for Waikiki. I do believe the IMP has seen it's day. I don't need Saks but I also don't need 8 T-shirts for $20. My understanding is that there will also be restaurants and bars. Are there enough solid local restaurants that could make a go of the location or will it be chain restaurants like Beach Walk?

I think the question should be "What would best replace IMP? Any suggestions?

It is, the International Market Place has long seen its heyday come and go.

Hopefully they can do something like the Waikiki Beach Walk - Walking down Lewers Street in the early 2000's was not a fun proposition - very dark, everything run down - all around gloomy - they tore down all those old buildings and now it is a very thriving area - what a huge difference it is.

You can always get 8 t-shirts for $20 at the stadium flea market... Waikiki isn't as impressive as I thought it would be. I hope it regains some elegance.

+1 on the Stadium Flea Market. You can get just about everything the "International Marketplace" has, but for less $$.

In just the couple years we have lived in Waikiki there have been several changes. The Hyatt building remodel was pretty significant. They re-did the sidewalk and put in high end shops. It's WAY nicer walking by there now, and the Ugg (sp?) store is pretty much always packed with Japanese tourists.

A better food court would be welcomed by me for sure. It would also be nice if they could design it so it retains the lush tropical feel with the tress.

Why spend $40 at the International Market place, when you can spend $20 at the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet for the same thing?

And who can afford Saks Fifth Avenue living in Hawaii? Gas cost too much here! Swap meet all the way!!!

Actually, I rarely buy new. I shop at Goodwill.

The land there doesn't belong to me, so I don't feel entitled to dictate what is done with it.
