Southern Plains! LOL

Or Indian Country as there are something like 45 Native American tribes headquartered within the state of Oklahoma.

Southern Plains, South-Central, or Southwest all work as decent monikers for overall culture, topography, and geographical traits of Oklahoma.

But the most appropriate is The Indian Nations!

This morning TMC was running the 1931 version of the Movie "Cimmaron" which is about early day Oklahoma and the Osage county and the Cherokee Strip. During the entire movie they referred to Oklahoma as the "southwest" even though today the case could be made that the Cherokee Strip and the Osage county would be considered the one part of Oklahoma that is Midwest in a Kansas sort of way.

I think the "southwest" designation has fallen out of favor time. But we all remember the "southwest conference" which was made up of entirely Texas teams (and even Oklahoma in the early days). But it certainly existed at one point for Oklahoma.
Technically the southwest conference was Texas teams and Arkansas which ironically is east of Oklahoma. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State were part of the Big Eight with Kansas (& state), Missouri, Nebraska, Colorado, and Iowa State. Sort of like a great plains version of the Big 10.

There might be a panhandle county that is sort of Southwest. There might be a couple counties that resemble the South. The rest of Oklahoma is Plains/Midwest.

The southwestern part of the state has some elements of the southwest with the Wichita Mountains. They give it a southwestern feel. And it is hot and dry down there.

So much of the "southwestern" part was probably due to ranching and cattle in the early times. Seems like it got lumped in with Texas, New Mexico and Arizona a lot because Arizona and New Mexico were still kind of "frontier" states just as Oklahoma was in early times. It might also be because Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arizona all achieved statehood in the same period and they were the last three states to achieve statehood in the lower 48.

Actually EddieG is correct.

Oklahoma (not Okie State) was a charter member of the Southwest Conference.

Jamil's is still there. Not in the old location, the widening I-44 took that. The new location is just a mile east of the old one, otherwise Jamil's is much the same as always.
