If you could take Metrolink and have an iPad, sure.

At those times you would be cutting it close to being stuck in traffic scenario. Leave earlier for work and later for home you may be able to do it about 1.5-2 hrs.

Alternatively, you could move up a bit. Given your preferences (Ladera and Laguna Niguel) somewhere like Tustin or Orange may be acceptable. There is a lot of relatively new tract housing in the Orange hinterlands and Tustin Ranch area. Cheaper than Irvine but tract is all the same.

man y'all are some blue hairs..

1.5... 2 hours from OC in the early morning and I could hit the AZ border...

If you leave south orange county by 6:30, you will make it to any area in LA barring there are no accidents. It's not a bad commute to LA, but like everyone said, going south into OC won't be fun after 2 or 3pm.

I hope when you crash at 100+ mph, you don't kill any innocent drivers.

I have a client who had a commuter making this very commute crash into one of their trucks at over 100 mph. Client was doing work in the median. Big rock truck pulled out of the job which necessarily required him to cross the fast lane. Big rock trucks do not accellerate fast. Guy came over the hill at 100 -110 slammed into the back of the truck and bencame a fireball. Driver of the truck was not hurt, but he was mentally messed up because he could here the guy screaming in the burning pick up. Awful stroy but a lesson to learn. No matter how good a driver you think you are, if you come over a hill at 110 and find a rock truck in your lane going 35 mph - you are dead. Had that been a school bus, the dumb driver would have been responsible for deaths of a dozen children.

If you are going to drive at high speed, you had beeter be on a flat and entirely empty freeway. Even then thee is a good chance that you will die.

It is humanely possible...

If you drive at 4am/2pm or 11am/8pm. Or, just take Metrolink.

I commuted for an hour each way, 5 days a week for many years. I got used to it. It was a non issue.

But I would not commute more than 3 hours total daily. Thats my personal limit.

prepare to live in your car, find a good chiropractor, and start yoga.. humans weren't meant to sit in traffic 3-6 hours a day.. hopefully you can afford a sweet car with a good stereo and just pretend you're walking... metrolink is annoying and uncomfortable but if you can take it that would be an option. Amtrack is nice but not available and too expensive.. it should be the same price as metrolink and ready to go everyday.

I did the LA/OC commute over a decade ago and I wouldn't ever do it again. You're wasting time money and sanity. Your stress level will go waaaaay up.

Why is it your dream to live in South Orange County?

I grew up in Orange County and I would rather move to L.A. than endure that commute. There are plenty of nice areas in L.A. I would find a place to live that is as close as possible to your job. Life is way too short to spend on the Ca freeway system in traffic everyday.
