We live in Mission Viejo (not by the ocean) in an older apartment that has a relatively useless cheap box air conditioner in the living room. We're also upstairs and yes heat rises so it's hotter.

The first 2 summers we were here, we dragged our mattress to the front room and slept in there with the slider wide open and the box going (because you could feel it if you were real close to it)

The third summer we finally broke down and bought a portable unit (NOT another window box thing) from Target to put in our bedroom and it's been great!! It's a little noisy, but you get used to it, and it's made all the difference if you don't have central air!

Good luck!

Where I live, the AC is called a "heat pump", which makes it sound more high-tech than it really is, which is an old-fashioned really loud type of heater/ac like they have at 60's/70's era cheap motels.

Does anyone here have a mini-split (like Mitsubishi Mr. Slim)? They sound really quiet from the outside of the building. I want one because I don't have central air/heat.

Eat a very cold crunchy dill pickle, it will hydrate you almost instantly and cool you down tremendously.

With me it is the humidity that zaps my energy not the heat itself but I currently live in Iowa which is very humid most of the time.

Yes but I work in automotive with the garage doors open, the inside temp in the shop hits 125*.

I am in it all day.

You consider upper Midwest summers oppressive? I grew up in Chicago and the summers feel milder there than even coastal Southern California summers to me. The sun is so much more intense feeling in SoCal even though the temps rarely get above 80 near the coast.
